A church, a patron saint’s celebration and an event honouring a man born in Koprivnica offer glimpses into different sides of the village’s history. The landscape also features fields, meadows, small groves and a settlement spread across stream slopes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Koprivnica, its cultural history and rural character can be the focus of your trip.
Church, Customs and Local Memory
Koprivnica is home to the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. An episcopal liturgy was celebrated there on 16 April 2016. Spasovdan is the village’s patron saint’s celebration. The church marks a specific religious site, while Spasovdan is a local festive tradition. Each gives a different shape to the religious side of the village’s history.
The “Dani Adama Bogosavljevića” (Days of Adam Bogosavljević) commemorates Adam Bogosavljević, who was born in Koprivnica. It is also one of the events celebrating traditional folk art in the settlements around Zaječar. The 24th edition was held in Koprivnica. One edition included a parade of participants and a group kolo dance. The event thus connects the memory of an individual with a cultural format rooted in the region.
A reconstruction portrayed the customs of celebrations in honour of Saint Nicholas as they were practised at the beginning of the 20th century. Residents of Koprivnica took part alongside residents of Sumrakovac and Zvezdan; the KUD Adam Bogosavljević from Koprivnica also participated. In the Timok region, the celebration of Saint Nicholas, known there as Slava, includes formally inviting guests to celebrate the saint together with the family. This custom is specific to the region.
Local History and Rural Landscape
Koprivnica has been recorded on Austrian maps since the beginning of the 18th century. The site of Selishtance lies on the Skrovnica plateau: ceramic fragments have been found there, and it was the location of old Koprivnica. Stara Crkva marks the site of a former wooden church roofed with shingles. Numerous traces of Roman culture also form part of the village’s history. Another form of tradition is the legend of a girl in a wedding dress, known as the “Girl in White”. Maps, archaeological traces, a former church site and folklore thus offer different insights into Koprivnica’s past.
The road between Zaječar and Negotin runs near Koprivnica. This should be distinguished from the described route from the main road to Negotin to the village: it passes through hilly, expansive, wooded meadows. The first detail places Koprivnica within the regional road network, while the second describes the rural character of the route to the village.
Most houses are situated on the slopes of the Vranjevac stream, and some are on the slopes of the Reka stream. Vranjevac flows into Reka, which runs near its confluence with the Jelašnička Reka. Farmland, meadows and small groves are part of Koprivnica’s landscape. There is woodland in the Koritar area and in the Timok municipal forest. The streams and slopes offer a different way of describing the village from its cultural and historical associations.
