Jalovik Izvor combines a hilly landscape with a river flowing through the village centre. There are also walks, the E4 trail and a village character shaped by traditional folk architecture and the history of the Church of Saint Petka. The annual Panajur Assembly also provides a specific date to plan your trip around. You can tailor your stay depending on whether you are most interested in the landscape, local history or the event.

Landscape, River and Trails

Jalovik Izvor lies in hilly terrain on the slopes of Mount Jalovik, which is 850 m high. The Izvorska Reka rises in the area around the village, flows through its centre and is a tributary of the Trgoviški Timok. The mountain and the river therefore offer two different points of reference: one describes the hillside setting, while the other runs through the village. Together, they help put the landscape in context in relation to the village centre.

The landscape around Jalovik Izvor is well suited to leisurely walks. The E4 trail offers a specific route: it continues across the slopes of Mount Tresibaba, with impressive views of the Stara Planina, to Jalovik Izvor and into the foothills of the Stara Planina. Walking and the E4 appeal to different planning interests. Walking offers a general reason to experience the landscape on foot; the E4 places the village on a specific route across Tresibaba and into the foothills.

Village Character and History

The hundred-year-old houses of Jalovik Izvor form an architectural ensemble of traditional folk architecture. The buildings, as well as the landscape, are therefore part of the village’s character. For travellers interested in rural architecture, they offer a distinct perspective on Jalovik Izvor, regardless of whether the focus of their stay is on walks or the E4.

Another architectural detail can be found in the churchyard of the Church of Saint Petka: a bell tower stands there, built at the time the church was constructed. The church also stands on the former trade route from Niš via Svrljig and onwards. Its construction history is thus connected to the area’s historic trade routes. The bell tower is part of the church’s building history, while the former road draws attention to the village’s past links with the wider area.

Before Kalna came into being, Jalovik Izvor was the centre of the BudĹľak region. This historical connection broadens the perspective beyond individual buildings, placing the village in the history of the region as well. Together with the former trade route, it gives the village a character that can be understood through both its buildings and its former regional connections.

Plan Your Visit and Travel

The Panajur Assembly takes place every year on 28 August in Jalovik Izvor. If the event is the reason for your trip, you can plan your dates around it. For a stay focused on the landscape or local history, the walks, E4 trail and Church of Saint Petka take centre stage instead. You can first decide which theme you want to shape your visit.

Jalovik Izvor can be reached from Niš via Svrljig. This route should be distinguished from the former trade route associated with the church: the first is useful for planning your journey, while the second is part of the village’s history.
