A distinctive reason to visit is Warendorf’s annual stallion parades: over three days in late September, more than 100 stallions are presented in 20 professionally narrated displays. The clearly defined dates give your planning a concrete anchor.
Old Town and Architectural History
The historic old town is home to more than 300 listed buildings. The Bentheimer Tower is the only surviving one of the five original structures in Warendorf’s fortification ring, built around 1300. It can only be viewed from the outside.
St. Boniface Collegiate Church in Freckenhorst, a district of Warendorf, offers a different chapter of architectural history. The five-towered church dates from the late 11th century and is considered one of Westphalia’s most significant Romanesque religious buildings. These examples represent different building purposes and periods: the fortification ring from around 1300 and a church building from the late 11th century.
Museums Between Religious History and Book Culture
The RELĂGIO Museum in Telgte’s old town covers 1,500 m² of exhibition space and explores religious life, from Bronze Age grave goods to the religious diversity of today. The Telgte Lenten cloth in the museum measures 4.40 m Ă— 7.40 m and is one of the largest Lenten cloths in Westphalia. The exhibition may change; if a particular section is central to your visit, check the current display in advance.
The permanent exhibition at the Liesborn Abbey Museum includes a digital monastic library where visitors can virtually leaf through the pages of the Liesborn Gospel. It also features a transcription in Carolingian minuscule and a German translation. Details of the digital presentation may change. If you are visiting specifically for the virtual display, check the current presentation details in advance.
Feldmark: Water and Walking Trails
The Feldmark recreation area lies northeast of Sassenberg and covers a total of 114 ha. Feldmark Lake has a water surface of around 13 ha and a bird sanctuary island. The extensive network of walking trails in Feldmark passes a fitness trail, an adventure playground and a Kneipp water-treading pool.
At the boathouse and landing stage on Feldmark Lake, sailors, surfers and pedal-boat users can enjoy their hobbies on weekends and by arrangement. As individual facilities may change, check opening days in advance and make any necessary arrangements.
Cycling and Equestrian Routes in the District of Warendorf
The 123 km Werse Cycle Route runs through the southern part of the district of Warendorf, with only gentle inclines. Lookout towers and 34 information panels help you find your way, and regularly spaced rest stops are equipped with tables and benches. There are railway stations and parking lots at many points along the route, making it possible to travel and transport your bicycle by train or car.
The 230 km eastern route of the 100 Castles Route runs through the district of Warendorf. There are 14 shelters with tables and benches along the route. The stated lengths of the two routes give you an initial idea of their scale, while the described rest facilities provide different practical reference points.
There is also a regional route for those interested in horse riding and walking: the Warendorf Riding Route is part of the 1,000 km MĂĽnsterland Riding Route. It offers varied riding and walking trails through the MĂĽnsterland landscape for different ability levels.
