Telgte combines a strong pilgrimage tradition with religious art, a cultural trail through the old town and circular routes in Emsauenpark. You can choose different focuses for your stay: the history of Our Lady of Sorrows, artworks around the town or a walk in the Ems floodplain. A canoe trip adds an activity on the water to the options.
Pilgrimage and Religious Art
Telgte was already a place of pilgrimage to the Holy Cross in the 13th century, as evidenced by an indulgence letter from 1300. Every year, around fifty large pilgrimages set out from parish communities in the Diocese of Münster to visit Our Lady of Sorrows in Telgte. The Telgte miraculous image, carved from poplar wood, dates from around 1370 and is housed in the Baroque pilgrimage chapel.
The Westphalian Museum of Religious Culture RELíGIO is located at Herrenstraße 1–2. The Telgte Lenten Veil is permanently displayed there in a gallery created specifically for it. Its 33 pictorial panels depict the Passion, symbols of the four Evangelists, the Lamb of God and five scenes from the Old Testament. The Lenten Veil is considered the best-preserved example in the region from the early 17th century. The panels offer visitors a tangible introduction to religious visual art, while the miraculous image and pilgrimage chapel represent the older pilgrimage tradition.
Old Town Routes and Guided Walks
The market square and Kapellenstraße are at the heart of Telgte’s old town and are popular with visitors and locals alike. The cultural trail, marked by red paving stones, passes through the town’s notable corners and lanes. Ten sculptures by Prof. Jörg Heydemann, made of bronze and sandstone, are also spread throughout the old town. The art is therefore not concentrated in a single location.
The Telgte audio tour starts at the market square and follows a route of about 1.2 kilometres past sights in Telgte. Tourismus + Kultur also offers several guided town walks with different thematic focuses. The audio tour is described by its approximate route length, while the guided walks are described by their themes—different points of reference to help you choose a town walk. Before setting out, check whether the app for the audio tour is available and confirm the latest booking details for the guided walks.
Between the Ems and Telgte’s old town is also the Place of Silence, a Stations of the Cross artistically designed in the 1970s by sculptor Heinrich Gerhard Bücker of Vellern. So, alongside the sculptures in the old town, visitors can also choose a work with its own name and artistic origins.
Emsauenpark and Canoeing
Emsauenpark is in the Emsaue nature reserve, designated as a European nature reserve because of its high ecological importance. Circular routes in the park invite you to go for a walk and discover the natural environment. This is a different way to spend time in Telgte than strolling through the old town: here, the focus is on trails in the protected area and nature.
For an activity on the water, the Tom Sawyer canoe trip is a specific option: it starts in Telgte on Westbeverner Straße (WAF 10), goes to Benediktshof in Münster-Handorf (MS 1) and takes about two and a half hours. The route from Telgte towards Münster-Handorf or Gelmer is another way to try canoeing. The Tom Sawyer trip has a stated start, destination and approximate duration; the second option is described as an introduction to canoeing. Booking details and seasonal availability may change, so it is worth checking before making plans.
Market Tradition
The Mariä-Geburts-Markt, which has been held since 1616, continues to take place in Telgte. Its specific programme and dates vary from year to year. If the market coincides with your travel dates, check the latest information in advance. Together with its pilgrimage, museum, old town routes and Emsauenpark, Telgte offers a variety of themes to consider when planning a stay.
