Northeast of Sassenberg lies the 114-hectare Feldmark recreational area. At its center is Feldmark Lake, with around 13 hectares of water and a bird sanctuary island. The lake forms part of the larger leisure area: alongside activities on the water, the Feldmark also includes a network of trails and other facilities. You can focus your stay on water sports and swimming, or more on trails and local history.

Water and trails in the Feldmark

The outdoor swimming area in the Feldmark is an EU bathing water site and is regularly tested for bacteriological and physical-chemical quality. Check the water quality and seasonal operating details before swimming.

Activities at Feldmark Lake include hiking, cycling, swimming, sailing, surfing, pedal boating and fishing. Sailing, surfing and pedal boating are available at the boathouse; pedal boats are available on weekends or by arrangement. If you plan to go pedal boating, confirm the arrangements before your visit.

The extensive network of trails in the Feldmark includes a fitness trail, an adventure playground and a Kneipp footbath. A signposted accessible circular route for wheelchair users is available; check local accessibility before your trip. Larger parking areas are located at the main entrances. The Feldmark is considered a destination for families, groups and individuals.

Historic trails and buildings

The historic town tour, just under two kilometres long, reveals traces and remains from the period of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. A longer alternative is the approximately 14-kilometre Bildstock circular route, which runs in and around Sassenberg’s town centre and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The routes therefore differ both in length and subject: the Prince-Bishopric period on the town tour, and wayside shrines as the main focus of the longer route.

More than 160 wayside shrines and wayside crosses are located in the Sassenberg municipal area. Alongside traces of the Prince-Bishopric, they give the subject of wayside shrines its own place in local history.

St. John the Evangelist Church was built in 1670 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. Haus SchĂĽcking was built in 1754 by Johann Conrad Schlaun for the episcopal chancellor Engelbert SchĂĽcking. The house can only be viewed from the outside.

The former menagerie is locally known as Brook and was expanded to include a pheasantry in the late 17th century. In the tourist information for the Ems Cycle Route, Haus SchĂĽcking in the town centre and a walk through the former menagerie are highlighted together. The church was built and the menagerie expanded in the late 17th century; Haus SchĂĽcking dates from 1754.

More than 300 listed houses stand in Warendorf’s historic old town.
