A walk through the center of Everswinkel takes you past historic rows of houses and monuments, as well as modern art. The Historic Quadrangle gives the center its distinctive shape: the streets form an irregular quadrangle, defined by the church, the houses around the church square and two old highways. Exploring the town on foot reveals these different layers of its architectural history.

Churches and traces of local history

At St. Magnus Church, individual features reveal its long architectural history. The Romanesque tower is all that remains of the original church, built in the first half of the 13th century. Construction of the Gothic nave began on February 28, 1489, and was completed in 1522. Two animal-like sculptures, unique in the region, stand on the south side. St. Agatha Parish Church existed before 1203 and is dedicated to Saint Agatha, who is regarded here as the patron saint against fire. Its tower retains its original Romanesque form and defensive character.

Smaller religious landmarks are also part of local history: wayside shrines and crosses near the village continue to serve as blessing altars during the annual processions. The oldest wayside shrine dates from 1699 and is located at Averberg Farm. Haus BrĂĽckhausen is first mentioned in written records in 1361. Its Renaissance building is considered the only aristocratic estate in Everswinkel and Alverskirchen to have retained its character over the centuries.

Traditional working methods at Up'n Hoff

At Up'n Hoff, the focus is on traditional working methods and the practical steps involved. Guided tours cover the permanent exhibition, the granary and the bakery; guided visits may require prior arrangements. Groups can take part in activities such as sowing, threshing, churning butter, roasting rye coffee and baking bread. Processing flax and dyeing the finished linen are also possible activities. The program may vary, and group activities may also require prior arrangements. The range of activities spans everything from working with grain to processing linen.

Nature reserves with distinct features

In Alverskirchen, you can explore the Dorffeld nature reserve on foot or by bike. Small paths and farm tracks wind through the MĂĽnsterland park landscape. Other protected areas are defined by their own landscape features: on the southeastern edge of Everswinkel lies the Kettelerhorst woodland, home to a colony of grey herons. The Mussenbachaue on the eastern edge protects a lowland stream and naturally wet woodland along its banks. In Alverskirchen, the Angelniederung nature reserve west of the K 33 includes a restored section of the Angel stream and the adjoining floodplain.

These areas offer a clear basis for choosing a nature-focused visit: Dorffeld is known for its small paths through the park landscape, while Kettelerhorst is home to a grey heron colony. Mussenbachaue and Angelniederung differ in their waterways and floodplain landscapes. Their features offer different ways to enjoy a stay, without suggesting that all the areas provide the same kind of nature experience.

Art and other interests

The sculpture La Croisette is based on the sculptor Stefan Rosendahl’s own biometric body measurements. The work abstracts the human figure into forms such as knees, noses and heads. Alongside the artworks discovered on a walk through the town center, it offers an unusual artistic idea to explore.

Everswinkel is also home to the all-weather leisure pool Vitus-Bad and the 18-hole BrĂĽckhausen golf course. If either of these appeals to you, check the current operating or access conditions before making plans. This lets you weigh the historic town center, culture and nature against other possible activities, without needing to focus on the same things on every trip.
