Ahlen combines its mining heritage with art, local history and literature. The water tower recalls the water supply for the Westfalen coal mine and the miners’ colony; the former mining site is also a destination for outings, with recreational activities. Museums, a church and traces of the poet Augustin Wibbelt add to the picture. These themes offer different ways to explore the city, from industrial history to art and literature.

Mining Heritage and Activities

Ahlen’s water tower was built between 1915 and 1917. Originally, it supplied water to the Westfalen coal mine and the miners’ colony. This function makes it a vivid introduction to industrial history: the tower recalls not only mining, but also the practical water supply for the mine and colony.

The site of the former Westfalen coal mine is a destination for outings, with a playground, sports facilities, green spaces and a spoil heap. The area thus brings together two distinct aspects: its former use by the mine and the recreational activities available on the site. Depending on your interests, you can combine industrial history with outdoor activities.

The mining rally takes participants around the site of the former Westfalen coal mine using a questionnaire. The mole Koslowski accompanies primary school pupils and other interested visitors.

By contrast, the Ahlen city rally starts in the historic town centre: questions guide participants on a walk through the centre. The tour is designed to take two hours and is primarily suitable for children aged 8 to 11. The two rallies therefore differ in their locations: one takes you around the former mining site, the other through the historic town centre.

Art, Local History and Church

The Ahlen Art Museum presents five changing exhibitions each year, featuring works from classical modernism and more recent contemporary art. If you plan to include a museum visit in your trip, check opening hours and Sunday tour dates in advance.

The Ahlen Local History Museum covers a different period: exhibits include Stone Age finds from the Ahlen area, early settlement traces, medieval town structures and the development of industrialisation in Ahlen. It is currently open only during special exhibitions, so check in advance whether a visit is possible during your trip.

The museums also differ in their visiting arrangements, which is worth bearing in mind when planning: check opening hours and Sunday tours for the art museum; the local history museum opens only during special exhibitions. St Mary’s Church in Ahlen was founded in the 13th century and adds a church history dimension to the museums.

Augustin Wibbelt in Vorhelm

Another local cultural connection leads to Vorhelm: the birthplace of the local poet Augustin Wibbelt (1862–1947) is a sight there. Wibbelt wrote poems and stories in Low German and Standard German. Along the Wibbelt Trail in Vorhelm, six stones bear sayings from his works, alongside sculptures commemorating him and his writing. The birthplace and the trail offer different ways to explore his legacy: the birthplace tells of his life, while the trail features his texts and memorials.
