The Château de Valençay took shape over three centuries; in 1803, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord acquired the château. Its long construction period makes the building’s history itself a way to explore the site’s past. A visit to the estate includes the château, park, garden, maze and mini-farm. The Château is a ten-minute walk from Valençay railway station. If travelling by car, you can use exits 13 or 14 on the A85, or exit 10 on the A20. There is a bicycle shelter at the ticket office, as well as a free outdoor car park.

Museums and historical traces

In Martizay, the archaeological museum spans several millennia, from hunter-gatherers to a Gallo-Roman villa. The Musée de la mine et des minéraux in Chaillac offers a very different focus: it displays minerals from around the world, including colourful fluorite. In Levroux, tools, machines and demonstrations offer insights into the production of leather and parchment. Together, they provide different ways to explore history, geology and craft processes.

Other places add to this picture, each with a different story to tell. The Musée Henry de Monfreid in Ingrandes presents travel accounts, works of art and mementoes of his expeditions to Africa. In Gargilesse, the Villa Algira preserves personal and family belongings associated with George Sand. The Château of Châtillon-sur-Indre played a role in the conflicts between Henry II of England and Philip Augustus. At the Train du Bas-Berry, stations, sections of track, level crossings and rolling stock are protected as historical monuments.

The Brenne, natural areas and trails

The Brenne is home to, or receives, three quarters of France’s 365 protected bird species. One specific route through its landscapes starts at the Étang du Blizon: the 12-kilometre circular trail passes ponds, natural meadows, heathland and wet woodland. Guided visits to the Étang Neuf are available by reservation. Beyond these examples, Indre offers a variety of landscapes: its 29 Espaces Naturels Sensibles (Sensitive Natural Areas) include ponds, heathland, meadows and forests, and are well suited to walks, nature watching and family outings.

Indre has 7,000 kilometres of signposted hiking routes, including several GR long-distance trails. For those who prefer cycling, the Indre à vélo is a 300-kilometre national cycle route crossing Indre from Châtillon-sur-Indre to La Châtre. Disused railway lines may also offer potential cycling corridors for discovering local heritage and monuments. The signposted hiking trails, the circular trail at the Étang du Blizon and the cycle route differ in length and mode of travel, making it possible to tailor your exploration to your interests.

Regional produce from Indre

Regional products also contribute to the area’s distinctive character. Valençay has a dual AOC/AOP designation for wine and cheese. Other local products from Indre include Pouligny-Saint-Pierre AOP cheese and the pyramid-shaped Valençay AOP cheese. Valençay and Reuilly are designated AOC wines from the vineyards of Indre. If you enjoy combining cultural attractions and regional produce when you travel, these offer another trail to follow according to your interests, alongside châteaux, museums and nature routes.
