Bommiers brings together Romanesque church architecture, the history of a medieval castle and a natural area with clearly identified trails. Visitors can choose from several different interests: those interested in architectural history can visit the Église du prieuré Saint-Pierre; the Château-fort links the history of fortifications with a marshland landscape; and at the Sources de la Théols, landscape features and trails take centre stage. The lengths of two named routes are also given, making it easy to compare them directly by this measure.

The Église du prieuré Saint-Pierre

The Église du prieuré Saint-Pierre in Bommiers was classified as a monument historique by decree on 16 February 1921. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; the choir, nave and transept are Romanesque. The nave also shows evidence of building phases from the 15th and 18th centuries. The Latin-cross floor plan describes the layout of the entire building, while the dated building phases mark individual stages in the development of the nave. This makes it possible to consider the church’s form and the chronology of its components separately.

Castle history and visits

The Château de Bommiers was a significant castle in the medieval tradition of castle-building in Berry. It stood in marshland, was surrounded by several branches of the Thonaise and was protected by a large pond. The combination of marshland, river branches and pond is central to understanding the site’s history: water was part of both its surroundings and its defences. The ruins of the Château-fort extend across a four-hectare park; the castle is described as the most imposing fortress in Berry.

To visit the Église Saint-Pierre, collect the key from the town hall during its opening hours. The Château-fort is privately owned and inhabited; guided tours are possible. As visiting arrangements may change, check the town hall’s opening hours and the availability of a tour in advance.

Natural area at the Sources de la Théols

The Sources de la Théols is a 43-hectare Espace Naturel Sensible that extends across Ambrault and Bommiers. The natural area includes woodland, meadows, springs and the two rivers Théols and Thonaise. History is also part of the experience: three trails offer the chance to discover the area’s unusual historical character. The area size and the trails provide different kinds of orientation: one describes the extent of the site, while the others reveal its historical dimension.

Comparing the lengths of two routes

The Sentier des Minimes in the commune of Bommiers is 2.39 kilometres long; the Sentier de la source de la Théols passes through Ambrault and Bommiers and measures 2.83 kilometres. This makes the second route 440 metres longer and takes it through both communes. The lengths allow a direct comparison, while the place names indicate the geographical reach of each trail.
