A fortress-like church, the source of the Bouzanne with its pilgrimage tradition, and a three-kilometre trail give Aigurande several distinct points of interest. There is also the weekly market, with seasonal fruit and vegetables from local producers. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: architecture, religious tradition, rural trail stops and a visit to the market can each be considered as a separate reason to visit. You can decide which aspect to prioritise during your stay, depending on your interests.

Church architecture and functional design

The Notre-Dame Church in Aigurande has a fortress-like appearance, with its thick buttresses; a machicolated bartizan stands at the choir. Its appearance combines a strong overall impression with a deliberately defensive feature at the choir.

The Abattoirs Régionaux du Centre offer a different architectural emphasis. Their geometric design is reminiscent of Art Deco. The rear halls have concrete shell vaults and openwork skylights that provide natural lighting and ventilation. The abattoirs were inaugurated on 14 September 1937. Thus, a fortress-like church and a geometrically designed functional building stand side by side as two distinct architectural themes.

The landmarks also differ in age: the Chapelle Notre-Dame de La Bouzanne dates from the 18th century, while the facilities at the source were rebuilt in 1865 and 1866. The inauguration of the abattoirs in 1937 adds a later point of reference to this timeline.

The source of the Bouzanne

The source of the Bouzanne is dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Pitié and is visited as a pilgrimage site on the Tuesday after Pentecost. The facilities visible today at the source were rebuilt in 1865 and 1866, with a basin and a stone monument. A chestnut grove at the source offers pilgrims and visitors a shady place to rest. The 18th-century Chapelle Notre-Dame de La Bouzanne is nearby. If you plan to visit on the Tuesday after Pentecost, check the local arrangements in advance.

A trail through rural details

The Sentier Nature, Verdure, Bouchures starts in Aigurande and is three kilometres long. Along the way, you pass an old washhouse, a fishing pond, woven hedgerows and other small rural landmarks. The stops can be viewed through two themes: the washhouse and fishing pond represent water-related features, while the woven hedgerows show another aspect of the rural landscape. Unlike the individual buildings, this trail focuses on stopping points and on the connections between water, hedgerows and small rural landmarks.

Friday weekly market

In 2026, Aigurande’s weekly market takes place every Friday morning and offers seasonal fruit and vegetables from local producers. The market gives you a specific reason to visit on a Friday morning if you would like to include local produce in your trip. For travel dates in later years, check the market day again in advance.
