A stone Stations of the Cross from Poitou in the Église Saint-Germain, built in 1856, traces of the former forge site of Les Forges, and two named walking trails give Crozon-sur-Vauvre a distinct focus on culture and discovery. If you want to plan your time, you can compare the listed walking durations; if you prefer solving puzzles, you’ll find two different treasure hunts. Local landmarks also include a remarkable oak and a small bridge that may date from an ancient Gallo-Roman road.
Church, château and forge history
The Église Saint-Germain was built in 1856, replacing the former medieval church in the lower part of the village. Inside is a stone Stations of the Cross from Poitou, created by Abbé Graillot with the support of sculptor Cyr Bedu. The building and the Stations of the Cross thus offer two distinct historical points of reference: the year the present-day church was built and a work of art created jointly.
At the Château de La Lande, the imposing east wing remains, set between two square towers and moats. The lords of La Lande had the château built towards the end of the 1570s. The approximate date places the construction in its historical context, while the surviving form of the east wing gives the château a distinctive architectural feature.
Les Forges was established in 1672. Its operations made use of the surrounding forests of Montpeget, Fond du Four and Garenne de Crozon, as well as the water power of the Vauvre. At the former site, about one kilometre from the church, you can see the master blacksmith’s house, the forge workers’ accommodation, pools and the dam. Check locally before visiting to confirm whether the site is open to the public.
Small places and traditional interpretations
Le Chêne du Nau is a remarkable oak in the village of Boué. According to local tradition, the tree was planted to commemorate a notable place. In the old dialect of Berry, “Nau” was a variant of “Noël.” The story thus connects the oak with a memorial place and a regional word.
La Planche à la Noire is a small, picturesque bridge on the Chemin du Boué au Plaix. It may be a remnant of an ancient Gallo-Roman road. This possible interpretation gives the visible bridge a historical connection without presenting its origin as certain.
Treasure hunts and self-guided discoveries
For “Sur les pas d’Hirsute,” images of Hirsute are displayed at eleven different locations in the village. The game is intended for children aged five and over, accompanied by an adult. Check before travelling whether the printed game booklet is available. The different locations give the search a local structure, while the age recommendation and required adult supervision clearly define who can take part.
The treasure hunt “Sur les pas du Père Gadou” combines puzzles, collecting clues and searching for treasure. The route is four kilometres long; a three-kilometre bonus section adds more clues. If you plan to do both sections, the stated distances add up to seven kilometres. Use the current leaflet for route details and check before travelling whether it is available.
The discovery trails in Crozon-sur-Vauvre are free and available year-round as self-guided visits. Check before travelling whether there are any temporary changes. This lets you distinguish between the treasure hunts and a self-guided visit, rather than treating these formats as the same activity.
Compare two walks side by side
The “Balade de la Croix Saint-Jacques” is a 5.4-kilometre walking route in Crozon-sur-Vauvre, with a listed duration of one hour and 15 minutes. The “Sortilèges et légendes” walking route starts and ends in Crozon-sur-Vauvre, is 10.8 kilometres long and has a listed duration of two hours and 30 minutes. Both the distance and the listed duration for “Sortilèges et légendes” are therefore twice those of the shorter route.
“Sortilèges et légendes” is also marked with the difficulty rating Yellow. This is a stated category, not a general assessment of personal suitability. Current trail conditions may change on either route, so take this into account when planning.
Your choice depends on the format you want: a shorter or longer walk, a treasure hunt with a specified bonus section, or cultural and historical discoveries at individual sites.
