Levroux showcases medieval heritage in a variety of architectural forms: at the Porte de Champagne, at Les Tours, the remains of a castle, and at the Maison de Bois. The large Collégiale Saint-Sylvain adds another architectural highlight; a guided city tour explores the medieval town in a series of stops. Levroux is recognised as a Petite Cité de Caractère®. You can therefore plan your visit around either specific buildings or the guided tour, depending on whether you want to focus on individual architectural details or a guided walk through the town and its heritage.
Fortifications, Castle and Architectural History
The Porte de Champagne is a uniquely preserved example of Levroux’s medieval fortifications and an important example of 15th-century military architecture. Following restoration, it is once again open to traffic in both directions. As traffic regulations may change, check the current rules before travelling.
Les Tours are the only surviving remains of Levroux Castle, built in the 15th century. They consist of an entrance châtelet—a structural entrance section—and two round towers. While Les Tours illustrate castle architecture, the Porte is evidence of the town’s fortifications.
Church, Construction Period and City Tour
The Collégiale Saint-Sylvain is a large church classified as a Monument historique that visitors can explore. The Maison de Bois was built between 1492 and 1495—a more precise date than the 15th-century timeframe given for the castle and military architecture. This allows you to compare a specific construction period with a broader historical era in Levroux. The guided city tour takes you in stages through the medieval town and along its medieval heritage. It is a good option if you would rather explore the town and its heritage on a walking tour than focus on a selection of individual architectural themes.
Cycling Routes, Workshops and Fishing
There are five cycling routes around Levroux. They include Le coteau de la tour, Romsac, La vallée de la Céphons and Les bois de Moulins et de Romsac. Availability and route markings may change; check the latest information for your chosen route before setting off.
The artists’ workshops were once located in the former Quartier des Mégissiers. Fishing takes place at Étang des Orbidas. Before fishing, check the local rules in force.
When planning your visit, the activities offer different formats: the guided city tour takes you through the medieval town in stages, while the five cycling routes offer an option for exploring the area around Levroux by bike. You can choose which one will shape your stay based on how you would like to explore.
