Buzançais offers several points of interest: historic buildings, a walk through the seasonally changing arboretum, and a weekly market held on a set day. You can shape your stay around these themes to suit your interests.

Architectural Heritage from Different Eras

The Chapelle Saint-Lazare is the only surviving part of a leper colony mentioned in a papal bull issued by Pope Alexander III in 1175. It is also the oldest monument in Buzançais. For culture enthusiasts, it brings together a historical trace from the 12th century and a landmark building in the town’s history.

The Priory of Sainte-Croix de Buzançais was founded between 1419 and 1421, probably as an offshoot of the Priory of Sainte-Croix in Caen. During the French Revolution, it became national property. In 1791, the municipality bought the priory with the aim of establishing Buzançais’s first town hall there. Its history thus spans its founding period, a significant political turning point and a planned change of municipal use.

The Pavillon des Ducs belongs to a different architectural history: it is the last surviving building of the château commissioned in the 1530s by Philippe Chabot de Brion, Count of Buzançais and Admiral of France. Renaissance motifs can be seen on the doors and windows. The pavilion draws attention both to the history of the château and to specific architectural details, while the priory is shaped by its founding and its later planned use.

Seasons and Activity

Visitors can take a walk through the arboretum and admire its changing foliage and blossoms over the course of the seasons. Its particular appeal lies in this transformation: the focus is on plants whose appearance changes throughout the year. This offers a different perspective from the historic buildings, whose stories are defined mainly by dates, architectural history and former uses.

The municipal swimming pool is supervised to ensure visitors’ safety. If you plan to visit during your stay, check the current operating conditions beforehand. This keeps supervision in view as an important condition for visitors without implying any specific opening hours.

Weekly Market and Cycling Route

In 2026, the weekly market is scheduled every Friday at Place du Général de Gaulle. It showcases regional flavours, colours and local expertise; the selection at individual stalls may vary. If the market is one of your main stops, check the date for your specific travel dates. Friday is therefore a clear guide for planning your day, while the selection at the market stalls may differ.

Another option is the Véloroute 49, “La Cyclo Bohème entre Touraine, Berry, Creuse.” It provides a cycling connection from Buzançais to Argy and its tourist train. If you plan to use this route, check the route conditions and signage before setting off. Alongside the buildings, the seasonal walk and the market, this provides a specific cycling option that you can plan around the route.
