Uusimaa offers a range of ways to enjoy a trip: marked trails in Espoo, coastal landscapes near Porvoo, and historic sites in Helsinki and Raseborg. To plan your trip, first decide whether you want to focus on nature trails, cultural history or both. The destinations described are in different parts of the region, so choose a main focus before planning your accommodation and connections between stops.

Trails, Shores and Nature

In Espoo, you can choose between two very different routes: the R2 Route and the Rantaraitti. The R2 Route is more than 10 kilometres long, fully marked and runs as a trail through the landscapes of Oittaa and Pirttimäki. It is suitable for hiking, trekking, trail running and mountain biking. The starting points at Oittaa and Pirttimäki are accessible by bus, and both have car parks.

Espoo’s Rantaraitti offers a different experience: the 40-kilometre coastal trail is designed for walks and relaxation in a maritime setting. Along the route are almost a hundred points of interest that showcase Espoo’s flora and fauna, cultural history and buildings, and share anecdotes about life on the coast in the past. When choosing between the two trails, consider not only their different lengths but also their focus: the R2 combines several active pursuits with a marked trail through the landscape, while the Rantaraitti focuses on the shore and themed insights.

The Varlaxudden recreation area on the island of Emäsalo in Porvoo offers another coastal perspective. Its landscapes open up views of the archipelago and the open sea. The area is well suited to summer picnics as well as birdwatching in spring and autumn. These seasonal differences may help you decide when to travel.

The Nuuksio Lakeland in the Uusimaa region covers approximately 200 square kilometres. It has well-maintained, marked hiking trails and diverse, unspoilt wilderness. Sipoonkorpi National Park offers opportunities for skiing, hiking, cycling, climbing and geocaching, and is easy to reach by bicycle. If you want to plan for a specific trail length, the park also has the 1.4-kilometre Byabäcken Nature Trail, which passes through lush forests and golden fields.

Helsinki and Porvoo: Maritime History and the Old Town

Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a maritime district of Helsinki. The marked Blue Route runs from north to south through Suomenlinna, from the main jetty to the King’s Gate; it is about 1.5 kilometres long one way. In Finland, the HSL ferry connects Helsinki’s Market Square with Suomenlinna year-round, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. Check the timetable before your visit. The route and ferry connection offer two specific points of reference for planning a visit.

In Old Porvoo, you can admire colourful wooden houses and stroll along winding, cobbled streets. Red-ochre riverside warehouses add to the historic townscape. Founded in 1896, Porvoo Museum helps preserve and present the cultural and natural heritage of Porvoo and Eastern Uusimaa. This makes it possible to combine walks through Porvoo’s Old Town with a look at the region’s heritage.

Local specialities are another distinctive part of the town’s appeal: Runeberg tarts, named after Finland’s national poet, are available in Porvoo all year round. The Brunberg confectionery factory has been making chocolate and confectionery there since 1871.

Village History and Landscapes in Western Uusimaa

Fiskars Village was founded in the 17th century and is a former ironworks village. Today, it is considered a centre of Finnish design and art. Culture, exhibitions, arts and crafts, activities and events are available there year-round. Fiskars Museum tells the story of the village through stories and historical objects. This gives the village a different focus from the coastal trails, with village history and arts and crafts alongside its present-day cultural offerings.

Raseborg Castle served as the administrative centre of Western Uusimaa in the Middle Ages. In the park at SvartĂĄ Manor, winding paths, romantic bridges, statues and ornamental buildings shape the grounds, along with a water lily path over the water. The castle and the park are different stops for travellers interested in historic sites and designed landscapes.

In Kirkkonummi, the Meiko Nature Reserve encompasses Lake Meiko, smaller ponds and forest landscapes. Another specific trail in the municipality is Meikonkierros: it is 8.3 kilometres long, marked with yellow diamonds and passes a campfire site.
