In Ruotsinpyhtää, industrial history, church art and outdoor activities come together. One highlight is Strömfors Ironworks, which you can explore independently or with a guide. Options include tours about its architectural history, dramatised and general tours, and an audio guide. Check in advance which tours are running during your travel dates and whether booking is required. This lets you plan your visit around whether you prefer to choose your own points of interest or follow a guided format.

Strömfors Ironworks: History and craftsmanship

Strömfors Ironworks was founded in 1695 and is one of Finland’s best-preserved ironworks communities. The western branch of the Kymijoki River flows through the site. Its water powered the waterwheels for about 250 years and kept the tilt hammers running. The river and ironworks are therefore also linked in the history of technology: hydropower was part of the operation for a long time.

At the Strömfors Ironworks Forge Museum, visitors can learn how the historic ironworks operated, how blacksmiths worked and what tools they used to make items such as nails and tools. An authentic water-powered tilt hammer is also on display. A visit to the museum offers a tangible insight into the working methods and equipment that are part of the ironworks’ history.

The Forge Museum is open in summer; groups are received by appointment. Check these visiting arrangements before your travel dates. In summer, Strömfors Ironworks also offers dramatised and general tours, as well as free blacksmithing demonstrations at the Upper Forge. For these seasonal activities, check the programme for the year of your trip.

Summer programme and church art

The summer cultural programme also includes live music and summer theatre. Changing exhibitions are held in summer in the gallery in the Old Stable’s attic. The programme ranges from blacksmithing demonstrations to stage performances and exhibitions. If you have a particular event or exhibition in mind, check the dates for your travel period.

Another cultural highlight is Ruotsinpyhtää Church, an octagonal central church completed in 1770. Its altarpiece, “Ylösnousemus” (“Resurrection”), was painted by Helene Schjerfbeck in 1898. The church building and the painting offer a different perspective on the area’s cultural history than the ironworks, with a focus on architecture and a specific work of church art.

Hiking and cycling

For those who want to explore on foot, there is the eight-kilometre Kukuljärvi hiking trail. It starts on the grounds of Strömfors Ironworks. The trail length is a useful guide for planning, but no walking time or difficulty level is specified. As conditions can change seasonally, check them before setting out.

A cycling trip offers a way to experience the beauty of the Kymijoki Valley. The route highlights Ruotsinpyhtää and Strömfors Ironworks as regional treasures. For a different kind of cycling, Eagle Karting rents out electric fat bikes and provides route directions and a map of popular mountain bike trails in the forests of Ruotsinpyhtää. Check rental availability in advance.

Wellsters LUONTO VOITTAA AINA also offers equipment for independent outings by canoe, kayak and SUP board, as well as for fat biking. There is also an indoor karting track at Strömfors Ironworks. These activities extend the options around the ironworks to include time on the water, on a bike and indoors. Which ones are suitable for your trip depends on the activities you plan to do.
