A 270-hectare forest area lies near the centre of Hyvinkää: Sveitsinpuisto. To the north, it borders Sveitsin Hiihtokeskus in the Kulomäki area. There is also a railway museum in an authentic station and depot area, museums dedicated to local and textile history, and circular trails of varying lengths. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
Forest, slopes and circular trails
At Sveitsin Hiihtokeskus, snowboarding and downhill skiing are available at Sveitsi Snow Plaza and on slopes of varying difficulty. The centre includes the Matterhorn slope café, which serves food and sweet treats. Sveitsinpuisto and the adjacent ski centre thus bring forest and slopes together in one area to visit, without implying a particular order for the day.
Two circular trails start at Sveitsin Maja and run through the nature reserve along the slopes of ridges and kettle holes. Lukkojen kierros is 2 kilometres long; Harjukierros is 4 kilometres. Trail length is a practical difference to consider when choosing: if you’re looking for a shorter loop, you could consider Lukkojen kierros; for a longer route, Harjukierros. Both share the same starting point and described landscape, but differ in length.
The Kytäjä-Usmi forest area lies west of Hyvinkää. It has about 70 kilometres of marked hiking trails and about 27 kilometres of mountain biking routes. There are seven maintained campfire sites in total along the routes. The approximate distances help you consider hiking and mountain biking as different ways to explore this nearby natural area; the campfire sites are an additional point of reference for trips in the area.
Railway, local and textile history
The Finnish Railway Museum is a National Responsibility Museum dedicated to railway heritage. It presents the history of Finnish railways in an authentic station and depot area along the Hyvinkää–Hanko railway line. Guided tours are available for all age groups. Several annual events and open days complement the programme, mainly in spring and summer; the dates vary from year to year.
In central Hyvinkää, Museokeskus Taika brings together the Hyvinkää Art Museum and Hyvinkää City Museum and their exhibitions. The City Museum tells the story of Hyvinkää and its residents. The Art Museum presents contemporary art and art movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. Taika thus brings local history and art from different periods together in one place.
The Valvilla Factory Museum is located in the courtyard of the Hyvinkää Wool Factory and tells stories spanning more than a hundred years. Its exhibits include a loom made by the Italian manufacturer Nebiolo in the 1950s; the fabric woven on it is Finnish military cloth. A fulling machine from 1910 remained in use until October 1981, after which it was transferred to the museum. Getting there and planning your visit
R trains stop at Hyvinkää railway station. From there, it’s a ten-minute walk to the Finnish Railway Museum. Check the route information before travelling. There is a free car park near the museum entrance; you can also check the latest visitor information about it before your visit.
