Pernå brings together the life story of Mikael Agricola and a protected coastal landscape. In the church village, the Agricola Trail passes places from his childhood and also offers a view of the medieval church. Pernå Bay and the marine protected area in the Pernå Archipelago are designated as a Natura 2000 protected area; during bird migration, the bay is an important resting area for birds. In Pernå, cultural history and nature thus stand side by side as distinct highlights.
Agricola, the trail and the church
The Pernå Agricola Museum is housed in the former primary school in the church village of Pernå, now known as Agricola House. It presents the life and work of Mikael Agricola, who was born in Pernå. The museum and building thus connect a specific place in the church village with the biography of the father of the Finnish written language.
The Agricola Trail in the church village takes walkers through places associated with Agricola’s childhood. You can also view the medieval church in Pernå from the trail. While the museum presents Agricola’s life and work, the trail leads to places connected with his childhood; the church adds another historical point of interest to the route. These different ways of exploring the area make the Agricola Trail appealing to travellers who want to discover cultural history not only through a museum exhibit, but also through the place itself.
The church also has its own building history: it was probably built between 1410 and 1440, and its bell tower in 1853. The dates refer to different parts of the building and should therefore not be understood as two competing dates for the same structure. Visitors interested in historic architecture can distinguish between the church’s presumed medieval origins and the later construction of the bell tower.
Pernå Bay and bird migration
Pernå Bay offers another perspective on the area. The bay and the marine protected area in the Pernå Archipelago are part of the Natura 2000 protected area. In addition, the bay and its surroundings are classified as a nationally significant landscape area. The two designations have different scopes: the Natura 2000 designation covers the bay and the marine protected area in the archipelago, while the national classification covers the bay and its surroundings as a landscape. The bay’s importance as a resting area for birds during migration adds to this picture. For nature enthusiasts, this is a specific seasonal connection to the landscape of Pernå.
Events and remembrance
The Agricola Society in Pernå holds several events every year, including summer festivals, exhibitions and gatherings. They attract both local residents and visitors from nearby areas. Individual exhibitions may change. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates in advance.
The Pernå Veterans’ Museum is also located in Pernå. It was founded in 1997 and expanded in 2004. Its exhibits include handicrafts made during quiet periods at the front, uniforms, literature, medals and photographs. There is also a scale model of a trench. The exhibits offer different perspectives on remembrance: handicrafts are presented alongside uniforms, texts, awards, photographs and a model. As individual exhibitions may change, it is advisable to check what is currently on display before visiting.
