Karjalohja offers two clear highlights: the church village on the narrow Pukkilanharju ridge and the natural environment of Karkali Nature Reserve. A marked loop trail, the stone church and the Kulttuurivintti exhibition space give you specific places to include in your plans.
Church Village Between Two Lakes
The church village lies on the narrow Pukkilanharju ridge, part of the second Salpausselkä, between Lakes Lohjanjärvi and Puujärvi. Its cultural landscape is valued for its exceptional setting and the buildings lining the main road.
Karjalohja’s stone church stands in the centre. It was completed in 1860 and designed by provincial architect Jean Wiik. In summer, it serves as a wayside church. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
Nature in Karkali Nature Reserve
From the car park on Karkalintie, a marked circular trail of about one kilometre passes Torhola Cave and leads to a black alder grove by the shore. The route thus connects a cave site with a distinctive patch of woodland by the water.
Torhola Cave is one of Finland’s largest natural cave formations created by glacial meltwater. Karkali is considered one of the most beautiful broadleaf forest areas in southern Finland. Those interested in plant life can see the rare Finnish elm species, wych elm and mountain elm, as well as straight-trunked linden trees, along the Karkali Trail. The natural attractions offer different points of interest: glacial geology takes centre stage at the cave, while the Karkali Trail highlights plant life, including rare elms and straight-trunked lindens. This lets you choose between a geological and a botanical focus when exploring nature.
Visitors must stay on marked trails in the nature reserve. Fires and picking mushrooms or berries are prohibited; check the current reserve regulations again before travelling. Visitor facilities at the car park include an information board, a dry toilet, picnic tables and waste disposal. Check the facilities on site.
Exhibitions and Other Activities
Kulttuurivintti is on the upper floor of the Karjalohja Library. The approximately 90-square-metre exhibition space offers lake views from its windows and is available for exhibitions year-round. It is open during the library’s service hours. Plan your visit around these hours and check them in advance.
Another sporting option is the disc golf course at Koulukuja 10, with four holes. Lohja Spa & Resort offers a seasonal leisure option: in summer, it has a sandy beach, a waterfront terrace and a viewing terrace, as well as a wide range of sports activities. As facilities may change, check the current offerings before planning a visit. The leisure options differ in focus: the four-hole disc golf course is a clearly defined sporting venue, while the resort combines a beach and terraces with a wide range of sports activities in summer. This offers a choice between a single sport and a broader seasonal programme.
