In Espoo, you can focus on museums and cultural sites or explore coastal paths and natural areas. The options vary considerably, from short nature trails to a long route through Nuuksio National Park. This lets you tailor your choices to your interests and the time available, without having to combine every place into one set itinerary.

Museums and cultural history

The Leikki Museum, in the courtyard of the WeeGee Exhibition Centre in Tapiola, focuses on childhood, toys and play, and offers cultural experiences for all ages. WeeGee itself is a museum, exhibition and event centre. KAMU’s exhibition “A Thousand Stories About Espoo” tells the city’s history from the Stone Age to the present day. Temporary exhibitions explore international and local historical themes; at KAMU, visitors can see, touch and try things out.

The Gallen-Kallela Museum brings together architectural and art history: Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865–1931) designed and built the castle-like studio and home of Tarvaspää. It opened to the public as a museum in 1961. Temporary exhibitions present the life and art of Gallen-Kallela and his contemporaries, as well as modern art. The collection includes artworks, artefacts, archival materials and the house library of Akseli and Mary Gallen-Kallela.

The Futuro House by Matti Suuronen (1933–2013) offers a different perspective on modernism. It is considered an icon of space-age architecture and a vision of its time; the exhibitions provide insights into experimental forms and the optimistic ideas of modernism. It is open to visitors seasonally. The Glims Farmstead Museum also has a distinctive focus: Glims is a historic, centuries-old farmstead in its original location. Working demonstrations, guided tours and events explore the seasons of rural life. Check the current programme for specific dates.

Coast and island experiences

The Espoon rantaraitti runs along the coast of Espoo and stretches for more than forty kilometres. Bridges along the route make it possible to explore the coast on foot and by bicycle. In summer, the trail also offers an opportunity to discover the archipelago off Espoo. Its length makes it a different kind of outing from the short nature trails in the city.

A visit to the Pentala Archipelago Museum combines a journey by sea with a museum visit and the island’s natural surroundings. The museum tells the stories of people in the archipelago, including the daily lives of its residents and the carefree summers of villa guests. The Gurli House preserves the story of the last summer in the life of fishing widow Gurli Nyholm, in 1986. A 2.3-kilometre nature trail starts in the museum area and leads to Lake Pentalanjärvi and Diksand sandy beach. The museum operates seasonally; check the conditions for your planned visit.

Nature trails and a range of route lengths

At Träskända Manor Park, nature and cultural history come together. The park is a nationally significant cultural-historical environment; its exceptionally extensive landscaped park has largely been preserved in its original form. Two easy trails run around the nature reserve. Each is about one kilometre long and accessible with a stroller. A nature trail through the park’s woodland adds another way to enjoy the natural surroundings.

At Villa Elfvik, the nature trail is 700 metres long and accessible to wheelchairs and strollers when there is no snow. There is a picnic table next to the birdwatching tower. For a longer route, Nuuksio National Park offers several options: the easy, two-kilometre Punarinnankierros starts in Haukkalampi, at Haukkalammentie 32. It is suitable for beginners and passes through forest and pond landscapes; there are campfire sites and campsites along the way. The 1.4-kilometre Päivättärenpolku loop starts beside the courtyard of the Haltia Nature Centre. Haltia is right next to Nuuksio National Park, offers equipment rentals, and runs seasonal courses and events. The programme may change.

For a longer option, a 14-kilometre route runs through Nuuksio National Park from Siikaniemi via Haukkalampi and Kattila/Högbacka to Nuuksio North Gate in Vihti. A 4.6-kilometre connecting trail leads from Haltia to Haukkalampi. For travel to Nuuksionpää or Kattila, bus routes 245, 245A and 245K depart from Espoo Centre or Espoo railway station, platform 32. As routes and services may change, check the timetables before travelling.

Seasonal cultural events also include the Organ Night & Aria festival, which offers night-time concerts with a varied programme throughout the summer in the medieval Espoo Cathedral.
