Vestervig Church is the largest village church in the Nordic region and was a monastery church. Vestervig Klostermølle and the church were part of the demolished monastery. The mill is a ground-level Dutch windmill, built around 1860. The buildings point to different aspects of the monastery’s history: the church’s former function takes centre stage, while the mill is notable for its design and approximate date of construction. This makes it possible to recognise their shared historical context without equating the church and the mill.
Monastery History, Museum and Art
A museum on the history of prisons and the legal system was established in the former jailhouse in 2014. The front building of Vestervig Ting- og Arresthus houses an art exhibition by local artists. This brings the history of law and imprisonment together with an art display from the town. On a walk through Vestervig, you will also encounter Camilla Nørgaard’s “Vestervig Trapperne”. This work offers a different perspective alongside the exhibition: here, you can also encounter art while walking around the town. The cultural themes therefore differ not only in their content, but also in their form: a historic institution, an exhibition, and art encountered on a walk.
Landscape and Hiking
Nature-oriented forestry is practised in Lodbjerg Dune Plantation: old and dead trees are left standing to support biodiversity. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a concrete insight into how the forest is managed: here, nature-oriented forestry can be seen in a measure taken to manage the tree population. The Lodbjergruten also passes through this plantation, so you can combine learning about forest management with a section of a hike.
From “Højene”, you can look south towards Thyborøn and north towards Lodbjerg Fyr. There are also six Bronze Age burial mounds arranged in a row. Højene is therefore both a viewpoint with two named viewing directions and a site with a linear group of Bronze Age burial mounds. The view and the row of mounds offer different ways to experience the landscape: one set of landmarks lies on the horizon, while the other belongs to the site’s prehistory.
The Redningsvejen is a challenging 67-kilometre hiking route through Thy National Park. From Lodbjerg Fyr, you can follow it north towards Lyngby or south towards Agger. Its length and difficulty make it a substantial hiking option; the stated directions give you two specific routes to follow from the Fyr.
The Lodbjergruten is a 9.5-kilometre circular hike of moderate difficulty. The route passes through Lodbjerg Dune Plantation, across the dune heath, and by Lodbjerg Church. Compared with the Redningsvejen, the loop is considerably shorter and rated as less demanding. The routes also differ in their layout: directions from Lodbjerg Fyr are given for the Redningsvejen, while the Lodbjergruten is a loop. This lets you take both the distance and the nature of the route into account when choosing.
