One of Europe’s largest shifting dunes is Råbjerg Mile. The main activity there is a walk across its sand. North Jutland combines wide beaches, unique nature and coastal towns, and lies between the North Sea to the west and the Kattegat to the east.

Bog, coast and trails through the landscape

At Hanstholm Fyr, the wheelchair-accessible Dronningestien leads from the lighthouse garden onto the cliff to a viewpoint overlooking the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. The circular route is about 1.5 kilometres long. Maintenance and weather can affect surfaces and facilities; check conditions before your visit.

Lille Vildmose offers a different kind of nature experience. The Mellemområdet is open to the public and can be explored freely; you may enter the bog’s forests only with a guide. Lille Vildmosecentret offers private tours and public guided tours. The peat railway runs during holidays, on weekends and on public holidays. Check its operating times before your trip. At Lille Vildmose, visitors can observe European bison, moose, red deer, wild boar, cranes and eagles.

For a longer hike, the Nordsøstien runs for about 48 kilometres from Hadsund in the south to Lille Vildmose in the north. It offers historic, cultural and impressive nature experiences. The formation of the landscape can also be understood in context: Jyske Ås was formed about 15,000 years ago by melting ice, as well as by stones, gravel, clay and sand. At Grenen, the Skagerrak and the Kattegat meet.

At the southern edge of Tvorup Klitplantage, a birdwatching tower offers views over Ålvand. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle; with a good pair of binoculars, you can observe cranes and red deer there, depending on the season. At Lodbjerg Fyr, an exhibition about the lighthouse keeper’s duties is open to visitors.

Architecture, art and history

In North Jutland, cultural subjects range from architecture and art to archaeology. The Kunsten building in Aalborg is the only museum building outside Finland designed by Aalto. Skagens Museum has the world’s largest collection of works by the Skagen Painters. Voergaard Slot dates from 1481 and houses an art collection that includes works by Raphael and Goya.

Lindholm Høje offers a different focus: the burial site is marked by numerous stone formations that indicate almost 700 graves. Nordjyllands Kystmuseum comprises four museums. Together, these offer different ways to explore—from a museum building and art collections to a burial site and a group of museums.

Animals, rides and regional cuisine

At Aalborg Zoo, you can observe animals up close, including tigers, lions, giraffes, anteaters, armadillos and capybaras. Dinosaurlandet at the zoo features 20 almost lifelike dinosaurs. As exhibits may change, check the current presentation before your visit.

FĂĄrup Sommerland offers more than 60 rides; the admission ticket also includes use of the aquapark at no extra charge. Check the admission policy before your trip. There are three mountain bike trails in Thy National Park; trail conditions may vary.

North Jutland’s cuisine includes blue mussels, langoustines, Skagen ham and crisp vegetables. This selection adds regional dishes to discoveries of the coast, nature and culture, without taking the place of the region’s varied landscapes and destinations.
