Lyngby is a former fishing village in the dunes. Lyngby Beach is by the fishing village of Lyngby in Thy National Park. The old rescue road, the heath and the coastal history give the area several points of interest.

Dune heath and distinctive landscapes

Lyngby Hede is a dune plain with parabolic dunes and dune lakes. The natural environment on the heath is of great national and international importance. Particularly valuable are the extensive, interconnected areas of dune heath, as well as the wet, nutrient-poor dune hollows and Lobelia lakes. The landscape therefore encompasses a variety of habitats: broad expanses of heath as well as wet hollows and lakes between the dunes. Those interested in nature and landscape features will find a distinct focus here, alongside the beach and cultural history.

Walking routes and seasonal access restrictions

The old rescue road north and south of Lyngby is now part of the Vestkyststien walking route. From Lodbjerg Lighthouse, walkers can follow the Redningsvejen north to Lyngby and return along the beach. The entire route is about 13 kilometres long. This distance is an estimate; trail conditions may vary by season. Before setting out, check the current conditions on your planned section of the route.

A seasonal restriction is also important when planning your route: access is prohibited east of the Redningsvejen from 1 April to 15 July. Follow the local signs in the area. The rule applies to the area east of the road and should be taken into account when choosing a route section.

Rescue services and coastal history

Lyngby’s rescue station was established in 1882 and decommissioned in 1975. In Lyngby, a rescue station with a boathouse stands alongside the Redningsvejen. The road offers a way to explore both its former role as a rescue route and its present-day role as part of the Vestkyststien.

The rescue station has eight bunk beds, a kitchenette, a toilet and a cold shower in the building. If you are considering staying overnight there, check in advance whether this is currently possible. Two small shelters are located opposite the rescue station at Lyngbyvej 40. Before planning to use them, check their current availability and the rules that apply.

A coastal battery was built north of Lyngby during the Second World War. It includes well-preserved bunkers and trenches. Together with the rescue station, it illustrates different chapters in the area’s coastal history: the rescue services on the one hand, and military installations from the wartime period on the other.

The beach and planning your accommodation

Lyngby is one of the beaches with fewer facilities. During the bathing season, the hygienic quality of the bathing water is tested six to ten times. When planning your time at the beach, two different aspects are therefore important: the facilities available and the checks carried out during the season. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it can help to weigh up these beach conditions alongside your planned walks and your interest in the dune landscape. Your stay might focus on the coastal path, the landscape, time at the beach or the history of the area; be sure to factor the seasonal access restriction and conditions on the relevant routes into your plans.
