For almost 200 years, the old merchant’s courtyard in Doverodde served as a meeting place. Today, you can explore the area from different perspectives: art at SMK Thy, Nordic boatbuilding in Naturlandsbyen, and trails through the landscape along the Limfjord offer different focal points. When choosing your stay, consider whether you want to focus on cultural history, craftsmanship or outdoor activities.
Art, history and cuisine
A striking silo and a carefully reconstructed warehouse provide the setting for SMK Thy, a permanent museum in Doverodde. There, you can see changing exhibitions alongside selected works from Denmark’s largest art collection. At SMK Thy, you can experience the works in dialogue with the architecture, history and unique landscape of the Limfjord. The building and landscape are thus part of the art’s local context.
Centralen is located in the old merchant’s courtyard. This restaurant focuses on seasonal Danish ingredients, organic produce and reducing food waste. Its operations and concept may change; check the latest information before visiting. If you want to combine culinary discoveries with Doverodde’s cultural and historical focus, Centralen is another aspect to consider when choosing where to stay.
Boatbuilding and trips on the fjord
An article from August 2025 reports that the Viking Ship Guild in Naturlandsbyen has been building boats according to the Nordic clinker-built boat tradition for more than 20 years; this tradition is recognised by UNESCO as cultural heritage. A December 2025 article invites visitors to watch the Neessund Vikingeskibslaug build and maintain ships in Naturlandsbyen. This brings both the tradition and the practical work on the boats into focus.
During the summer season, the guild sails Thor and other boats on the fjord in front of Naturlandsbyen. Seasonal arrangements may change; check the latest sailing information if you are planning a trip. Watching boats being built and taking a trip on the fjord are different experiences. If you are interested in both, check visitor information and sailing schedules separately.
Naturlandsbyen is freely accessible to visitors; access details may change. A water shelter in Doverodde Marina can also be booked by anyone. Each booking provides access for 24 hours. Before travelling, check the latest access details and the shelter’s availability.
Landscape and trails
A municipal profile from June 2021 identifies the Limfjord near Doverodde as a Natura 2000 site and notes its protection under the Habitats Directive. Two named hiking options offer different landscape experiences: the 12.9-kilometre Oldtidshøje Route passes through Dover Plantage to the Oldtidshøjene burial mounds at Skibsted Fjord. The four Fjordbystierne routes start in Doverodde and pass through varied landscapes with protected and nature conservation areas, as well as fertile farmland. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The 42-metre-high observation tower at Doverodde Købmandsgård offers far-reaching views. Together with the trails, protected landscapes and the Limfjord, it broadens the choice between focusing on art and local history or spending a stay with trails and scenery at the forefront.
