The glacial landscape, the moor and the history of the buildings offer different ways to explore Hundborg during a stay. They come to life through specific details: the parallel hills of the Hundborgbuen, Hundborg Mose and Hundborg Kirke. A signposted walking route and the “Dyrenes Paradis” cycle route add two different ways to engage with the area.

Hills, Rock and Moor

The Hundborgbuen is a system of long, parallel hills. A tongue of glacier advancing from the north pushed them up during the last Ice Age. Their shape and formation are therefore connected: the hills can be viewed both as a landform and as the result of a glacial process. Bavnehøj reaches 71 m above sea level. This elevation is another way of describing the landscape. Hundborgstenen, in turn, is made of larvikite, adding rock type as a distinct aspect. Elevation, landform and material offer different perspectives on the landscape.

Nature and land-use history meet at Hundborg Mose. During the Second World War, peat extraction there developed into almost an industry. At the same time, the moor is home to a very diverse birdlife. These two topics draw attention to different aspects of the same moor: its use during a particular historical period and the variety of its birds. For those interested in the landscape as more than a geological form, this offers a different perspective from the hills and rocks.

Church Architecture and Art History

Hundborg Kirke was built in the 12th century and consists mainly of granite blocks. Its Romanesque nave and chancel stand alongside a Gothic extension to the west. The layout makes the different architectural forms tangible: the church combines Romanesque elements with a Gothic extension. The altarpiece, carved by Søren Pedersen of Horsens in 1691, is another feature. The materials, architectural layout and altarpiece offer different points of interest for anyone curious about church architecture and older works of art.

On Foot and by Bike

The signposted walking route through Hundborg can start at the car park by the church. Information boards explain points of interest along the way. The route thus combines a clearly identified starting point with explanations along the way. It suits a walk where the explanations of what you see matter as much as the path itself.

For cyclists, the “Dyrenes Paradis” route offers another point of interest: Finn Bukhave’s ceramics workshop is located along the route in Hundborg. If you plan to visit the workshop, please check access arrangements in advance. This allows you to treat the workshop visit as a separate part of your planning.

Tradition and Views

The traditional Midsummer bonfire is held annually at Dybdalsgave. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates. Hundborgmolen offers another way to connect with the moor: the viewing platform, built in 2021, is on the southern edge of Dybdalsgave Forest and offers a beautiful view over the moor. Its year of construction and precise location at the forest’s edge are clear reference points for anyone considering how to include the landscape and local traditions in their plans for a stay.
