Ydby offers a range of things to explore on a trip where walks and cultural history play a part. At Ydby Hede, you can walk among Bronze Age burial mounds towards the Limfjord. Ydby Church and several routes with different landscape and cultural features add to the area’s appeal. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether your main interest is the burial mounds, Romanesque architecture or a particular route.

Ydby Hede: Burial Mounds and Fjord Views

The Oldtidskirkegården at Ydby Hede is Denmark’s largest group of Bronze Age burial mounds, comprising 49 mounds in total. Visitors interested in early history will find a clear archaeological focus here. You can also walk among the burial mounds towards the Limfjord, combining an interest in the group of mounds with a specific walk.

Ydby Hede also offers a view of Skibsted Fjord. According to the Danish Nature Agency’s area plan dated 12 October 2023, the two eastern extensions of the heath are part of Natura 2000 site No. 23, “Agger Tange, Nissum Bredning, Skibsted Fjord and Agerø.” There are two distinct fjord connections at the heath: the walk leads towards the Limfjord, while the view from the heath is of Skibsted Fjord.

Romanesque Architecture

Ydby Church offers a different cultural and historical focus. Its chancel and nave were built from granite ashlars during the Romanesque period. Both parts of the building therefore share the same period and material. This places the church in a different period from the Bronze Age burial mounds on the heath: in Ydby, you can focus either on an early group of burial mounds or on Romanesque church architecture. If you want to organise your stay around particular themes, these offer two clearly distinct historical perspectives.

Routes with Different Features

The Dover-Skov Route starts at the car park by the entrance to Ydby Skov, where Ydbyvej meets Oddesundvej. It passes the Cirkus Miehe Mausoleum, located inside an ancient burial mound. This gives you both a specific starting point and a distinctive cultural and historical destination to orient yourself by. The route combines the woodland named in its title with a mausoleum whose setting inside an older burial mound is part of its description.

The Flarup Route has a different focus: a detour via Siagervej takes you into Ydby Skov. Along the way, it offers views over fields and towards Nissum Bredning in the distance. If woodland and scenery are your main considerations when choosing a route, these details can help guide you. The distant view of Nissum Bredning is a different feature from the view of Skibsted Fjord from Ydby Hede.

The Sønder-Ydby Route runs along Trankær Hole. This route also offers the option of following a marked route, around 800 metres long, around the Nordisk Center for Vedvarende Energi. The stated length applies to this marked route; it provides a specific point of reference when choosing a route. The two features mentioned give you different points of interest: Trankær Hole as a landmark along the route and the marked trail around the centre.

The routes can therefore be distinguished by their respective highlights: the Dover-Skov Route passes the mausoleum, the Flarup Route offers a detour into the woods and distant views, while the Sønder-Ydby Route offers the option of a marked trail around the centre. Choose where to start your planning based on which of these themes interests you most.
