Vesløs combines church and community history with cycling on the Nordthy Route and nature topics in the surrounding area. The different points of interest are useful for planning your trip: the churches offer insights into different architectural and historical periods, while the route and landscape each have their own themes.

Churches from Different Periods

Vesløs Church is a Romanesque ashlar church dating from the 12th century. Its original nave and chancel have been preserved. The altar also has a distinctive design: it is made of granite blocks and bears a monolithic altar slab with a reliquary in its centre. Both the preserved original features and this specific detail of the furnishings are part of the church’s history.

Vesløs Free Congregation Church dates from a later period. It was built in the summer and autumn of 1911 and consecrated on 25 October that year. Before it was built, the Hannæs congregation held services for 15 to 20 years in the assembly hall in Vesløs and in the schools in Tømmerby and Arup. The altarpiece depicts Jesus healing a blind man on the road to Jericho; Chr. Andersen painted it in Thisted in 1912. Together, a Romanesque church with its original nave and chancel preserved and a church consecrated in 1911, each with its own community and building history, represent different periods.

Windmill and Planning Your Visit

The old Dutch windmill Bygholm Mølle serves as an interpretation centre for the history and nature of the surrounding area. It is primarily open to groups by prior arrangement. For Vejlernes Dag, the mill was open to the public on 1 June 2024 and 6 June 2026. Guided tours in the surrounding area were also on the programme for Vejlernes Dag on 6 June 2026. Prior arrangement is important for group visits; the public openings mentioned were tied to the respective event.

Nature in the Surrounding Area

Nearby, Tømmerby Fjord is part of the Vejlerne nature reserve. One hiking option is the Rødbofælled Route in Østerild Klitplantage, which leads almost to the edge of the nature reserve. A fjord within the protected area and a hiking trail near its edge offer two different ways to experience nature.

Vesløs’ natural history also forms part of the area’s character. The village was once one of the few places in Denmark where storks nested. This historical connection adds a story of its own to the landscape without implying that a breeding colony is present today.

Cycling and the Regional Setting

The Nordthy Route follows Tømmerby Fjord and passes through Vesløs. A signposted regional cycling route, Route 17 runs from Bulbjerg via Thisted to Nystrup Plantage. This makes it possible to distinguish the section passing through Vesløs from the route as a whole.

After crossing Vesløs-Frøstrup Road, the route follows a cycle and pedestrian path that can be used in both directions and runs along the former Thisted-Fjerritslev railway line. As route infrastructure may change, check the route against current information before setting out.

In the wider region, Hannæs stretches from the ferry terminal at Feggesund via Vesløs and Frøstrup to Bulbjerg. This geographical span describes the wider area; the churches, nearby landscape and cycling route through Vesløs each offer a different focus.
