Boddum was once an island; today, a Stone Age coastal cliff runs down to the beach on almost all sides. There is also a 6.2-kilometre route and the history of Boddum Church and Boddum Bisgaard. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Boddum, you can choose where to stay based on two interests: exploring the landscape or discovering its cultural history.

Coastal Landscape and Protection

The Stone Age coastal cliff borders Boddum on almost all sides and runs down to the beach. In the north and east, it gives way to flat beach meadows. This means a distinctive coastal edge and flatter beach areas sit side by side; the area’s former island setting is one of the defining features of this landscape.

In the Boddum Bakker area, the protection regulations take geological, botanical, cultural-historical and recreational interests into account. The protection framework therefore encompasses several perspectives: questions of nature and landscape sit alongside historical heritage and recreational use. This is a helpful way to view the area if you want to understand it not only by its shape, but also by the interests taken into account there.

Trails with Different Focuses

A long-established church path connects the area around Fugløvej with Boddum and is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. The Boddum-Bisgaard Route has a different focus: it is the 6.2-kilometre Blue Route and runs along a narrow peninsula between the fjord and the protected beach meadows before returning to Boddum Bisgaard.

You can choose between the routes based on what you are looking for: the church path connects the area around Fugløvej with Boddum; the Boddum-Bisgaard Route combines a stated distance with a course between the fjord and the beach meadows. As route conditions can change seasonally, check the latest conditions before setting out.

Boddum Church and Its History

Boddum Church is a lead-roofed Romanesque building made of granite blocks, with a chancel, nave and porch. These elements give the structure a clear layout; the material and roofing complete the picture of the church. Its furnishings include a crucifix dated to around 1375, bearing symbols of the Evangelists. The approximate date and the symbols depicted make the crucifix a cultural-historical point of interest in its own right.

A coin hoard is also part of the church’s history: in 1880, a hoard of 1,070 coins was found beneath its floor. The latest coin dates from 1626. The dates refer to different things: 1880 is when the hoard was found, and 1626 is the date of the latest coin. A carved stone with two human heads engraved on it was brought into the porch in the 20th century from the dismantled church tower. The architecture, furnishings, find and reused building stone thus offer different ways to explore the church’s history.

Boddum Bisgaard: The History of the Estate

After its separation from Irup, Boddum Bisgaard became a principal estate. At one time, it owned most of Boddum, a large part of the five southernmost parishes in Thy, and the churches of Boddum, Ydby, Gettrup and Hurup. This history of ownership gives the estate a place in the history of the surrounding parishes.

The construction of a barn in 1788 is mentioned, using stones from the dismantled tower of Boddum Church. This provides a concrete example of the histories of the estate and the church intersecting: building material from the church tower was used for the barn. Alongside the estate’s development from a separated property into a principal estate, this connection adds the history of Boddum’s estates to the themes of architecture and the church.
