Šumice offers different ways to explore the local history: the Šumické muzeum’s current exhibition focuses on residents’ lives, their traditional clothing, crafts and leisure activities. Historic farmsteads, technical heritage and nature areas add to the picture. When planning a break, you can choose your own focus rather than reducing the place to a single theme.
Museum and architectural history
The museum contains around 420 collected objects, presented in three rooms organised by theme. One resembles a traditional living room, another is devoted to traditional clothing, and the third covers agriculture and crafts. The museum is on the top floor of a historic municipal building dating from the 1930s. The exhibition thus brings together everyday life, clothing and working life without grouping these subjects into a single exhibition room.
The historic buildings also each have their own character. Pipalův mlýn is an important technical monument and is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. Its machinery and technical equipment are almost completely preserved; artefacts from the lives of millers in the first half of the 20th century are also on display. Trchalíkova usedlost is an immovable cultural monument featuring a historic barn, a retirement house and a cart shed. The complex also includes a functioning horse gin used to drive agricultural equipment, as well as a working replica of a fruit-drying barn.
Other houses can be distinguished by their documented architectural and historical features: Hasoňova chalupa is a preserved cottage or smallholding, with its ceiling beams dated to 1839. Šerkova usedlost is one of the oldest buildings in Šumice, and its history has been documented since 1777. Together with the mill and Trchalíkova usedlost, these buildings offer a varied picture of the role played by architecture, agriculture and technical equipment in local history.
Nature, views and routes
The Ovčírka area lies on the northern edge of Šumice and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. The Údolí Bánovského potoka offers a different connection with nature: the area covers the cadastral territory of Šumice u Uherského Brodu. Its most valuable features include a xerothermic meadow, individual wild pear trees and a belt of blackthorn shrubs. These landscape features give nature enthusiasts concrete points of reference when choosing what to focus on.
The Putování po šumických pověstech route has a viewpoint overlooking Šumice, Nezdenice and the 384-metre-high Babí hůrka hill. The section to Nivky is considered manageable for parents with young children and for seniors; this assessment applies to that section, not to the entire route. A marked route also starts at Šumice railway station. A cycle path leads to Šumice; if you plan to use it, check the surface before setting out.
Traditions and activities
Šumické hody lasts one day and is now held on the second Sunday in September. In the surrounding area, it is known as “dřinkové hody”. The fruit ripens around the time of the hody; in Šumice, povidla were made and fruit was dried. The festival is therefore also connected with a traditional local food culture. If this tradition is a focus of your visit, the September date gives you a specific time to plan for.
There are three ponds in Šumice operated for sport fishing. If you want to fish there, check the participation requirements again in advance. The available themes are clearly distinct: cultural heritage and the museum, nature and views, or an activity with its own participation requirements.
Find a holiday apartment to suit your travel interests
When looking for a holiday apartment in Šumice, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay. For cultural history, the museum, technical monuments and historic houses offer concrete points of interest. Those who want to focus on nature can look to Ovčírka and the Údolí Bánovského potoka; the viewpoint, cycle path and sport fishing add outdoor activities to the options. The railway line between Veselí nad Moravou and the Vlárský průsmyk passes through Šumice. For your specific train journey, check the timetable for your travel date.
