Starý Hrozenkov combines hiking trails with regional culture and recurring festive traditions. The Okolo Hrozenka educational trail covers 20 kilometres and explores a theme encompassing the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice. The landscape also gives your stay a clear setting: the town lies in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. This offers different focuses for planning your trip: longer hikes, nature and geology, as well as music and cultural events.

Hiking trails with different themes

The Okolo Hrozenka educational trail is 20 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. Its eight information boards cover the life and culture of the Moravian Kopanice, past and present. The route thus combines its specific length and difficulty with a cultural theme related to the region.

The Moravské Kopanice educational trail offers a different perspective. It runs through the landscape around Žítková and Starý Hrozenkov and starts in Starý Hrozenkov’s village square. Its 14 stops introduce historical and natural sights, as well as particularly valuable plants and animals. The two educational trails can therefore be considered in terms of different points of reference: the Okolo Hrozenka is defined by its length, difficulty and eight information boards; the Moravské Kopanice focuses on its 14 stops, their natural and historical themes, and its starting point in the town.

Landscape and basalt

Its location in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve places Starý Hrozenkov within a protected landscape. The Hrozenkovský lom, also called lom Skala, is a notable geological feature. This natural area is the only place in the White Carpathians where columnar basalt formations can be observed. This adds a specific geological feature to the themes of plants, animals and regional culture. For visitors who want to consider different nature-related themes when choosing places to visit, this offers a different focus from the educational trails.

Folklore and festival dates

The Kopaničárské slavnosti take place every year in Starý Hrozenkov. This traditional folklore festival features music, dance, cimbalom music and other folk traditions. Another annual musical event takes place in mid-June: a brass band festival with participants from Moravia and Slovakia. These two events offer different musical highlights, while the mid-June date provides a specific point of reference for planning your trip.

At the beginning of September, Hody and harvest thanksgiving celebrations include a procession in traditional costumes through the village. Historical agricultural machinery and tools used by ancestors in their work in past centuries are exhibited. Every year on 8 September, a pilgrimage celebration for the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is also held at the parish church in Starý Hrozenkov; it is associated with Hody and the harvest thanksgiving celebrations. Starý Hrozenkov’s traditional costume is distinguished by cross-stitch embroidery and is considered one of the most interesting folk costumes in the Slovácko region.

The Hrozenkovské hody also include a presentation of traditional products made by the Kopaničáři and products from local organic farmers. The products on display may vary. Two historic buildings offer further points of reference: the parish church of the Virgin Mary is a Late Baroque cultural monument dating from 1774; the chapel by the pond dates from the 17th century.

Cycling too

The long-distance Beskydsko-karpatská magistrála cycling route also passes through Starý Hrozenkov. For travellers who want to include cycling in their stay, it offers another specific connection to the town, alongside the two educational trails. The routes have different stated focuses: the educational trails present nature and cultural themes through stops and information boards, while the Beskydsko-karpatská magistrála is a long-distance cycling route that passes through the town.
