Popovice combines church culture and a firmly established autumn tradition with protected natural areas and leisure opportunities. This offers a range of options when choosing where to stay: the moving nativity scene, the Slovácké hody s právem festival, distinctive natural areas, and a leisure and sports complex.

Church, Bell and Moving Nativity Scene

The Church of Panny Marie is considered Popovice’s dominant landmark. A Gothic bell in the church tower dates from 1508; it is the second-oldest surviving bell in the Uherské Hradiště area. This gives the church a specific historical connection as well as making it a local point of reference.

The moving nativity scene Pohyblivý betlém in the Church of Panny Marie Růžencové was created by Popovice native Antonín Potomák and completed in 1950. It depicts a ten-minute Nativity scene accompanied by a carillon. If you would like to visit the nativity scene, check current visiting arrangements before your trip.

The Slovácké hody s právem Festival in October

The Slovácké hody s právem festival takes place every year on the first weekend in October, making it a regular autumn event in the cultural calendar. Saturday’s program includes a procession accompanied by music and the formal request for the hodové právo at the municipal office. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check that year’s program in advance: some details may vary from year to year.

Two Natural Areas with Distinctive Features

Stráně u Popovic is a protected natural area on steep slopes. Old orchards, pastures, wooded field margins and strips of trees shape the landscape. Its conservation objective is the Eurasian Black-veined Moth (Eriogaster catax), a species of European significance, and its habitat. The area thus combines a specific description of the landscape with a clearly defined species conservation objective.

The Popovické rybníky ponds offer another connection with nature. This Natura 2000 site is located in the cadastral area of Popovice u Uherského Hradiště, about 1 km north-northwest of Popovice in the valley of the Olšovec stream. Protected species include the yellow-bellied toad. Alongside the slopes of Stráně u Popovic, this makes another protected area and a different protected species a focus. The landscapes of the two areas differ: Stráně u Popovic lies on steep slopes, while the Popovické rybníky ponds lie in the valley of the Olšovec stream.

Leisure and Activities at Amfík Bukovina

Amfík Bukovina is a leisure and sports complex for relaxation and socializing in a natural setting. Facilities include a multipurpose ball-games court, a pétanque court, an outdoor workout area and a children’s playground. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific facilities on site from activities in the surrounding area. If you want to use a particular facility, check its current availability in advance, as offerings may change.
