Tučapy brings together a nature monument, local history and festivals in one place, with clearly distinct travel interests. The Koukolky Nature Monument is known for its protected vegetation, while the church, chapel and former fortress offer different historical themes. Events are held at various times of the year, too. This makes it easy to choose what to focus on in Tučapy: nature, architectural history, or a visit that coincides with an event.
Natural surroundings and Koukolky
Tučapy lies in the historic cultural region of Moravian Slovakia, on a gentle slope of the Chřiby Hills and in the Dolnomoravský úval lowland. These details place the village in both a cultural and a landscape context. The Koukolky Nature Monument is within Tučapy’s cadastral area, about 0.5 km northwest of the village. It covers 1.3615 hectares and preserves a unique xerothermic vegetation area with rare and protected plant species. For some species, Koukolky is the only known site in the eastern part of the Chřiby Hills.
Buildings and traces of history
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is a distinctive landmark of Tučapy and was built in 1934. The Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord is also one of the local monuments. Together, these two religious buildings provide a tangible architectural link to the village’s history. The church has a specified construction year, while the chapel is designated as a local monument.
A former fortress with three courtyards takes us further back in time: it stood in Tučapy and probably fell into ruin in the 16th century; it has not been mentioned since 1579. Archaeological traces are also part of the area’s history. Koukolky is one of the archaeological sites in the vicinity of Tučapy. Independently of this, the area around Tučapy was already inhabited in the Upper Palaeolithic; this early date refers to the area around the village, not to the dating of the finds at Koukolky.
Bedřich Beneš-Buchlovan provides a biographical link to cultural history: the writer, translator and publicist was born in Tučapy. Tučapy is also located in a wine-growing region. Along with the landscape and historic buildings, this adds both local history and a geographical connection to wine-growing.
Events throughout the year
Tučapská štamprla has been held annually in January since 2007 and is usually accompanied by cimbalom music. The traditional Slovácké hody s právem festival takes place in October, followed by a hody dance event. Tučapské kosení is held in late May or early June and is a mowing event modelled on an old rural custom.
The dates offer three distinct seasonal windows: January, late May or early June, and October. The events also differ in character—from the customary cimbalom music to the festival followed by a dance event, and the mowing event inspired by a rural custom. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific event date in advance.
