Kunovice brings together aviation history, traditional festivals and nature. The Letecké muzeum, the Kunovice Hody and the nearby Kunovský les nature trail each offer a different focus. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between events held on fixed dates and visits centred on the museum, architecture or a walk.

Aviation history at the Letecké muzeum

The Letecké muzeum v Kunovicích displays the former government aircraft Tupolev TU-154M “Naganský expres”. The museum also focuses on aviation history and aircraft production. The latter continues to play an important role in the Czech Republic and is concentrated in Kunovice, in the Uherské Hradiště area. A visit therefore combines a specific exhibit with a subject that has also shaped the town’s industrial history.

As part of an admission ticket, visitors can look inside aircraft and listen to crews’ radio communications with the control tower at Kunovice Airport. Individual exhibits may occasionally be unavailable, and visitor offerings may change due to operational circumstances. Check what is currently available before your visit.

Festivals with their own dates and traditions

Since its revival in 1996, the Jízda králů has been held in Kunovice regularly every two years. It usually takes place around Pentecost Sunday and about a week before the Jízda králů in Vlčnov. The festival and its accompanying events take place in Kunovice town centre and its immediate surroundings. The oldest known record of the Kunovice Jízda králů dates from 1892. If you are travelling specifically for the festival, check the dates for the relevant year separately.

The Svatováclavské hody s právem are also part of local folk tradition; they have been celebrated in Kunovice since 1918. A central feature of these Hody is the hodové právo. It derives from symbols of the authority of municipal self-government and represents rank, power and authority. The folk dance school is also held regularly in August and September as part of the Kunovice Hody. The two festival traditions therefore offer different points of reference for planning a trip: the Jízda králů follows a two-year cycle, while the Hody mark the late summer.

Historic buildings and clear visiting conditions

Listed house No. 679 was built in the first third of the 19th century, after Kunovice was hit by two devastating fires. It preserves a traditional black kitchen. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement. The Church of St Peter and Paul has had its present appearance since the 18th century; it is open during services. If you are considering including these places in your plans, keep their different visiting conditions in mind.

Outdoor activities at the Jízdy králů grounds and in Kunovský les

The Jízdy králů Kunovice grounds have a sports field with artificial turf, a skate arena and an outdoor fitness area. Sports equipment can be borrowed there free of charge. Locals and tourists use the grounds year-round for active recreation. As information about public facilities may change, it is a good idea to check before your visit.

Near Kunovice, the five-kilometre Kunovský les nature trail passes through a recreational woodland close to town, mostly over flat terrain. Ten stops introduce typical plants and animals of the floodplain forest community in the Morava River floodplain. The starting point is the clearing known as Jelení louka, near the cycle path to the Kunovice aircraft factory and Kunovice Airport. These trail features can help you choose; actual route conditions may vary.

When looking for a holiday apartment, your travel dates and preferred focus can make the difference: if you want to experience a festival, plan around its specific date. If you are travelling without a fixed event date, you can give different weight to the museum, historic buildings and nearby nature trail. This lets you choose Kunovice according to your own interests, without assuming a set itinerary for the day.
