A footbridge leads through the treetops to the early medieval hillfort of Chotěbuz-Podobora. The path is a fitting introduction to Karviná District: here, archaeological heritage, historic sites and river landscapes come together.

The Early Middle Ages at Chotěbuz-Podobora Archaeopark

Chotěbuz-Podobora is one of the most significant prehistoric and early medieval monuments in Cieszyn Silesia. The Archaeopark offers an interactive insight into what life was like at an early medieval hillfort. Reconstructed fortifications, replicas of period dwellings and production buildings bring different aspects of this settlement to life. Rather than focusing on just one building, you can explore different parts of life at the hillfort here.

The footbridge through the treetops leads to the hillfort. You can reach the Archaeopark by train, bus, car or bicycle; check connections before setting off. Cycle Route 6257 also passes the Archaeopark and runs along the Olše and Odra rivers. Check its route before departure if you plan to include it in your itinerary.

River Courses, Wetlands and Birdlife

At Hraniční meandry Odry, a roughly seven-kilometre meandering stretch of the Oder is preserved along the Czech-Polish border. The protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Heřmanský stav–Odra–Poolší bird protection area. The border and the winding river courses give this natural area its distinctive character.

Another natural highlight awaits you at Skučák, home to notable waterbirds, including great crested grebes and several duck species. The species you may see can vary with the season. The Těrlické mokřady educational trail offers a specific route length: it is 2.5 kilometres long and follows the Stonávka through floodplain forest and wetlands. Conditions along this trail can also change seasonally.

Karviná-rybníky is another of the district’s natural sites. The area provides a habitat for the hermit beetle and is also part of Natura 2000. Each site represents a different natural feature: the meandering river landscape of the Oder, wetlands along the Stonávka, and bird and beetle habitats around the ponds.

Fryštát and the History of Karviná

Fryštát Castle has been open to the public since 1997. Guided tours take visitors through furnished rooms in the main building and the Lotty House. A cultural heritage site in the Empire style, it is a prominent historic landmark in the region. Tour times and access conditions may change, so check the latest visitor information in advance.

A historical map featuring 35 places connected with the history of the vanished city offers another perspective on Karviná’s past. It lets you look beyond individual buildings and explore the city’s layered history. The Leaning Church of St Peter of Alcantara combines its distinctive appearance with an active place of worship: regular services are held on Sundays, and group tours with explanations are available by arrangement. Coordinate these visits locally. The Life Tragedy Memorial can be visited by prior arrangement.

The historic Masaryk Square is also part of Karviná’s townscape. Visitors will find cafés, restaurants, a confectionery, a tea room and fast-food options there. The food and drink options may change. On the edge of the city’s history is Kotulova dřevěnka in Havířov: built in 1781, the house is considered the last surviving evidence of the original settlement of present-day Havířov. Its exhibition offers a glimpse of domestic life in Cieszyn Silesia around the turn of the 20th century.

Parks and Recreation in Karviná

The 36-hectare Boženy Němcové Park was laid out in the English style in 1804. Activities here include cycling, skating, boating, fishing and walking. Seasonal carriage rides pass through the park; longer rides continue as far as Lázeňský Park. Individual offerings may change, and carriage rides are seasonal, so check whether they are running before your visit.

The Loděnice recreation area beside a former branch of the Olše offers another way to enjoy some leisure time. It has sports grounds, picnic areas, boat trips and fishing opportunities. Facilities and operations may change, so it is advisable to check current conditions before your visit. Whether you are interested in cultural history, birdlife or outdoor activities, each of these places offers a different way to experience Karviná District.
