Havířov brings together a range of themes for a stay: the distinctive character of the Sorela conservation area, a protected river landscape along the Lučina, and cultural sites and places of remembrance. There is also a central leisure park for children and the Havířovské slavnosti cultural event. If you are considering Havířov as a destination, you can weigh your options according to your interests: urban architecture, nature, history or a cultural program each offer a different focus.
City history on different scales
Sorela is the conservation area designated in 1992 around the centre of Havířov, which was built in the 1950s in the Socialist Realist style. The area includes an ensemble of residential buildings. It is bordered by Stromovka Forest Park on one side and extends to the meanders of the Lučina on the other. Sorela therefore represents not only an architectural style, but also a protected ensemble in the city centre: its architecture and the described landscape edges are among its defining features.
A different historical scale can be seen at Kotulova dřevěnka. It is one of the oldest surviving log buildings of folk architecture in Těšín Silesia and the last surviving example of the original development in what is now Havířov. Since 1979, it has housed an exhibition about rural life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Compared with Sorela’s city centre from the 1950s, this exhibition topic takes visitors to a different era of living and building.
Havířov Castle is also part of the city’s more recent history: it was officially opened to the public on 10 January 1998.
The meanders of the Lučina as a natural attraction
The Meandry Lučiny are a protected natural monument extending about 2.5 kilometres in length and covering a total area of 40.7 hectares. The site includes a naturally meandering watercourse, adjacent wetlands and floodplain forests. This landscape provides a habitat for protected animal species. The length and area describe different aspects of the natural monument: its course and the extent of the protected area.
Havířov thus offers two different perspectives: Sorela is defined by its built-up city centre and residential ensemble, while the Meandry Lučiny describe a river landscape with wetlands and floodplain forests. Those interested in architecture and nature can explore distinct themes here without reducing them to the same perspective.
Remembrance and planning your visit
The Památník životické tragédie commemorates the 36 men who were killed on 6 August 1944 during a Nazi reprisal action. The memorial houses a permanent exhibition by the Muzeum Těšínska entitled “Occupation and Resistance in the Těšín Region, 1938–1945.” The exhibition title covers a longer period, while the commemoration also focuses on a specific event and its victims. Visits to the Památník are possible by prior arrangement.
The memorial therefore combines a clearly defined historical subject with a specific condition for visiting. If you include this site in your plans, arrange your visit in advance. This allows you to account for it as a distinct part of your stay rather than assuming it can be visited spontaneously.
Cultural program and leisure activities
The central Dětský zábavní park has climbing frames, swings, sandpits and other attractions that children up to the age of 15 can use. Check the facilities and age information again before your visit. This will help you assess this particular offering according to the current guidance, without treating it as the same as the city’s other cultural and natural attractions.
The Havířovské slavnosti offer a different kind of experience: a traditional event organized by the Statutory City of Havířov. Its program combines various disciplines, Czech and international music, and a wide range of supporting entertainment. If the Slavnosti are relevant to your trip, check the specific event date. This will help you decide whether your stay should focus more on the city and nature themes described here, which are available year-round, or on a suitable event date.
