Petřvald combines a mining history with clearly documented dates, religious heritage, an educational trail in the town centre and forests around the town. This offers several ways to plan your trip: you can focus on historical dates and the exhibition on mining history, or set aside time for walks and easy bike rides. The short educational trail adds a specific route through the centre. You can weigh up cultural history and time outdoors as separate interests; deciding which will shape your stay is also a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.

Religious History and Mining

Construction of the Church of St. Henry was completed in 1837, and it was consecrated on 15 July 1838. The Stations of the Cross at the church date from 1843. Hard-coal mining in Petřvald began in 1833 and ended in 1998. There were 165 years between the start and end dates of mining, while the church dates span the period from 1837 to 1843. Two different time scales therefore sit side by side: a sequence comprising the completion of construction, consecration and the Stations of the Cross, and the long period between the beginning and end of mining.

Mining History at the Museum

The Technical Museum in Petřvald houses the permanent mining history exhibition “Tradice hornictví”. It covers the history, development and significance of mining in the Ostrava-Karviná mining district, with a focus on Petřvald. The focus maintains a local connection, while the mining district broadens the perspective beyond the town. This gives you the opportunity to explore mining history in greater depth if the dates 1833 and 1998 spark further interest. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Educational Trail and Forests

Petřvald is a green town surrounded by forests that invite you to go for walks and easy bike rides. The educational trail offers a different focus: it is in the town centre, is about 100 metres long and has five information-board stops. The boards make the short route an information-focused activity, while walks and easy bike rides put the emphasis on outdoor exercise. A barefoot-walking option adds another way to experience the trail. As individual physical features may change, it is advisable to check in advance whether this option will be available during your visit.

Leisure at Domek

The Domek leisure centre provides spaces for residents of Petřvald and the surrounding area to enjoy active leisure time. It organises workshops, sports and art competitions, creative workshops, summer holiday camps, exhibitions, musical performances and discussion sessions. This contemporary leisure focus complements Petřvald’s historical and nature-oriented themes. Unlike the church and museum, the emphasis here is on organised leisure activities, not historical dates or exhibition topics. The holiday camps are specifically held in summer. If you are interested in an event, check which dates fall within your travel period.
