A 7.5-kilometre stretch of the Oder, with five large river meanders, brings nature firmly into focus. Historic buildings, a museum and the Aquacentrum offer other themes to explore during a stay in Bohumín. This lets you tailor your time between nature, architectural history and water-based activities to your interests.
Explore the Oder meanders on foot, by bike or by boat
Hraniční meandry Odry is a protected natural monument covering 131.6 hectares. It includes a 7.5-kilometre stretch of river with five large meanders. The focus is therefore not only on the length and size of the protected area: the river’s recurring bends give this natural landscape its distinctive shape.
You can explore the area on foot, by bike or by boat. This choice makes the meanders a suitable focus for different ways of spending time outdoors. If you would prefer a specific route that combines architectural history with a walk or ride, the Červená stezka offers a different approach: you can follow it on foot or by bike.
Red-brick architecture and historic sites
Twelve Neo-Gothic red-brick buildings in Bohumín are part of the Červená stezka. Their shared style and building material give the route a distinct architectural theme. Unlike the river meanders, the focus here is not on the shape of a landscape, but on Neo-Gothic architecture; you can consider these two themes separately when choosing what interests you.
Starý Bohumín offers more historical sites to explore. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates back to the 15th century and became a pilgrimage site again after decades. The small Pustyňa Chapel is a Baroque building from the 18th century. It differs from the church both in size and in period.
The tomb of the Counts Henckel von Donnersmarck also tells a story of architectural history: the two-storey building has a crypt in the basement and a sacred space on the upper floor. It was remodelled into its present form in 1752. The layout illustrates the building’s two functions, while the date places the renovation in its historical context.
Museum: coins and finds from the Oder meanders
The Městské muzeum is located in the basement of the renovated Art Nouveau building Pod Zeleným dubem in Starý Bohumín. It houses the permanent exhibition “Bohumín - pohledy do minulosti města” (“Bohumín – Glimpses into the City’s Past”). The museum also displays the Starý Bohumín hoard: 54 coins dating from 1660 to 1860 give the collection a clearly defined historical timespan.
Other objects on display include a mammoth molar, a vertebra and a boundary stone from the First Republic era. These items were found in the Oder meanders. Together, they offer a different perspective on the natural landscape: the museum presents not only the river itself, but also finds from its surroundings. You can therefore see the landscape and the examination of specific finds as distinct ways of exploring Bohumín’s history.
Guided tours and water activities
The MO-S5 Na Trati infantry bunker offers regular guided tours on weekends and public holidays. Visits outside regular opening hours can be arranged by telephone. The bunker was declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 2004. If you plan to visit, take the stated tour days into account or arrange a visit outside regular opening hours by phone.
For exercise and relaxation in the water, Aquacentrum Bohumín offers a 25-metre swimming pool, a relaxation pool, massage jets, water spouts and a waterfall. There is also an outdoor pool, a 48-metre waterslide, a children’s paddling pool and other attractions. The sauna area includes Finnish saunas, a steam sauna, experience showers and a Kneipp path. As individual facilities may change, it is best to check the current offer before your visit.
