Planning a trip to Dolní Lutyně can start with a specific selection of cultural sights: the Church of St John the Baptist, the chateau or Rakusova-Stodola. In Věřňovice, protected river nature, plants and historic monuments are topics in their own right; cycling route 6257 offers another perspective for cyclists.

Church of St John the Baptist: Architecture and History

The Church of St John the Baptist has a single-nave main section, two adjoining chapels and a four-sided tower on the western façade. Its architectural form can be understood through several specific elements: the single nave, the two chapels and the western tower. It offers a different perspective on cultural history from the historic secular buildings and monuments found elsewhere in the local area.

Two dates are important for placing it in time: the church was completed in 1746. On 9 September 1759, both the church and its main altar were consecrated. Completion and consecration mark different stages in the history of the building.

Chateau, Barn and Monuments

Dolní Lutyně Chateau was declared a cultural monument on 4 October 1994. Groups can arrange individual guided tours with explanations in advance. If you are planning such a tour, arrange a time before travelling.

A different type of building is Rakusova-Stodola: a valuable polygonal log barn dating from 1803, with a thatched roof. The church and the barn represent different architectural forms; the barn is characterised by its polygonal shape and roof covering. This shows that the cultural heritage can be explored not only through religious buildings, but also through historic farm buildings.

In Věřňovice, a statue of St John of Nepomuk stands in front of the Chapel of St Isidore. It is a finely executed folk stone sculpture dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Věřňovice war memorial also stands on the road to the border crossing: a distinctively designed monument from 1866 with a wrought-iron railing. The statue and the memorial therefore differ both in function and in date.

River Nature and Plants in Věřňovice

The Věřňovice Natural Monument protects a distinctive river terrace on the Olše, with almost natural woodland and protected plant and animal species. The European protected area Niva Olše–Věřňovice also includes, among other areas, the cadastral territories of Dolní Lutyně and Věřňovice. The two protected areas differ in their stated scope: the natural monument represents the river terrace, while the European protected area includes the specified cadastral territories.

The plant life in the Věřňovice area also has several distinctive features. The district has an unusually large population of snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis); spring snowflakes (Leucojum vernum) are rare. The notable feature of the snowdrop is the size of its population, while the spring snowflake is notable for its rare distribution.

Cycling and Practical Information

Cycling route 6257 runs along the Olše and Odra rivers and is suitable for cycle touring. Most of it follows paved or surfaced paths suitable for road and trekking bikes. Surface conditions can vary on individual sections. When planning your ride, bear in mind not only the predominantly paved surface but also that conditions may not be the same on every section.

Printed promotional materials about the municipality and the region are available at the information centre in the Dolní Lutyně library. You can also buy postcards of the municipality there. As the availability of these items may change, check before visiting.
