Frýdlant Nad Ostravicí lies in the Ostravice valley below Lysá hora and forms a gateway to the mountains at the foot of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. Nature and riverside trails sit alongside traces of industrial history and historic religious buildings. When planning your visit, you can choose between these themes based on trail length and your interests: the educational trails differ considerably in both distance and subject matter from the cycling route.
Nature trails along the Ostravice
The Lesní stezka Vyhlídka is 1 km long and has eight stops covering local nature and wildlife. It is directly accessible by car or about a 10- to 15-minute walk from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí railway station. Its manageable length and stops provide a clear focus on nature. Check local access conditions before your visit, as restrictions may change.
The Naučná stezka Kamenec has a different profile: this educational trail is 2 km long, runs along the banks of the Ostravice and has seven stops covering the history and nature of the area around the river. It runs between the Harcovský Bridge and the footbridge in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, in the direction of Lubno. At 2 km, it is twice as long as the Lesní stezka Vyhlídka; the subject matter is also different, bringing together the river landscape, nature and history. Trail conditions may change, so check locally before setting out.
Industrial heritage and self-guided walking tours
For many years, the tourist information centre has run themed guided tours entitled “Po stopách frýdlantské litiny a smaltu”. They explore the past and present of an industrial sector that played an important role in the development of the town. Availability may vary by season; check whether a tour is offered on your travel dates.
A separate option is the self-guided walking tour of the same name. A description from 2024 gives its length as about 1 km and lists nine stops. Another, separate self-guided walking tour, “Po frýdlantských sochách”, focuses on local sculptures. For both tours, check the signage and access locally.
The “Galerie uměleckého smaltu a litiny” gallery’s permanent exhibition presents the history of enamel production in Frýdlant and historic cast iron from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It develops the themes of the industrial tours through enamel production and older cast-iron pieces. Opening arrangements may change, so plan your visit around the latest opening hours. The Ferdiš Duša memorial is also located in the cultural centre.
Chapel and church
The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated on 5 November 1876. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and decorated with paintings and a wooden ceiling. The chapel also serves visitors’ spiritual and cultural needs. As access conditions may vary, check them before your visit.
The Church of St Bartholomew reflects several stages in its construction history: it was built between 1672 and 1690 and extended in the first half of the 18th century. Since 3 May 1958, it has been a protected immovable cultural monument. Its construction, subsequent extension and protected status offer different points of reference for those interested in the church’s history.
By bike and at events
The “Frýdlant n.O.–Ostravice” cycling route starts at the tourist information centre in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí and runs for 23.4 km to the Frýdlant nad Ostravicí outdoor swimming pool. It is suitable for families, electric bikes and bicycles with trailers. The stated distance offers a different planning perspective from the two shorter educational trails; surfaces and conditions may change.
Events can also add a cultural dimension to a stay, but should not be taken as an indication of a fixed future date. In October 2025, a Drakiáda took place at Frýdlant nad Ostravicí Airport as part of a traditional open day. The programme included a traditional display of aviation and parachuting equipment, as well as a presentation of aviation and parachuting for the public. The Drakiáda took place in October 2025; future dates and programmes may vary.
