Krmelín combines a clearly identified cycling route with a local history that can be traced through specific dates. The Radhošťská Trail passes through the town; churches and crosses provide a cultural and historical focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Krmelín, these themes can help you decide where to stay: cycling, landscape views or architectural history.

A high point with views of Ostrava and the Beskydy Mountains

At 332 m above sea level, Krmelínský kopec is the highest point in the cadastral area of the municipality of Krmelín. Its summit, marked by a cross, offers views of Ostrava and the Beskydy Mountains. This scenic spot therefore combines a specific elevation with two clearly identified viewing destinations.

Local history and church architecture

The first written mention of Krmelín dates from 9 January 1447. According to the fief record of 1447, the town’s subsequent history remained closely linked with the history of Paskov. The Church of Saints John and Paul provides a later, architecturally specific landmark in this local history.

Construction of the Church of Saints John and Paul began in 1895. It was completed and solemnly consecrated on 1 July 1900 by the Dean of Ostrava, P. Špička. The church is a single-nave longitudinal building with a gabled roof. A prismatic tower with a pyramidal roof rises on the axis of the façade. “Single-nave” describes the basic layout of the church interior; “longitudinal building” and “gabled roof” describe its orientation and roof shape, while the tower aligns with the façade. This provides specific architectural features to consider alongside the dates.

Crosses and a chapel with their own dates

The oldest stone cross in Krmelín stands on Světlovská Street next to road I/58 and dates from 1828. Lyčkova Chapel on Proskovická Street dates from 1870. These dates provide two distinct historical reference points, 42 years apart.

The Brožův Cross is notable for its materials and design: it is a cast-iron cross set in a sandstone pedestal with late Classicist ornamentation. The year 1858 is inscribed on the back of the pedestal. The date is thus associated with a specific part of the cross.

Cycling route and hiking trail

The 66 km Radhošťská Trail runs from Bělský les in Ostrava via Stará and Nová Bělá, Krmelín, Mošnov, Příbor, Mniší, Tichá and Frenštát to Pustevny or Radhošť. Krmelín is therefore identified as a place along a longer route. The 66 km refers to the total length of the Radhošťská Trail, not the length of the section through Krmelín. A green-marked hiking trail is also available as a separate option for walking.
