In the Reichraming Hintergebirge, the Buchensteig Wilderness Trail runs from Anzenbach to Wilder Graben and back. The entrance to the national park via junction 4462 Reichraming leads to the Anzenbach hiking area. Anzenbach and Wilder Graben thus provide the tour with its distinctive landmarks.

Discover hiking trails and landscapes

Other trails offer their own highlights. The Lynx Trail runs through Reichraming. Quiet paths follow the clear Reichramingbach stream, inviting you to spend time by the water and take a dip in its cool waters. The Kreuzberg nature reserve in Weyer offers numerous opportunities for hiking and walking. At five stops, the Wildbach Experience Trail introduces the work of torrent and avalanche control in a playful, creative and informative way; information boards and interactive features accompany the route. The selection therefore ranges from paths by the water to a trail that explores an engineering topic.

The Guck-Naz Trail leads to the summit of Haingrabeneck, at an elevation of 841 metres. The Nagelschmied Trail passes historic sites on its way to the idyllically situated lake at Kesselfall. The Sebaldus Tour runs mainly along cycle paths, quiet side roads and well-maintained farm tracks. These specific route features offer different points of reference when choosing excursions based on the landscape, trail theme or route.

Rock, views and protected nature

The Trattenbach climbing centre features climbing routes on the face of Beisteinmauer and on the WeiĂźensteinerwand climbing crag. The summit of Beisteinmauer is at an elevation of 632 metres and offers views over the Enns Valley. In Losenstein, the Burgberg is a protected natural area with ravine forests and surrounding meadows. Together, these places offer a range of discoveries: climbing routes, a viewpoint and a landscape defined by its forests and meadows.

Craftsmanship and history

In 2015, the Trattenbach production of Taschenfeitel pocketknives was recognised as intangible cultural heritage by the Austrian UNESCO Commission. The Brandstätter Hammer houses the world’s largest collection of hand-forged nails. Both examples draw attention to different aspects of craftsmanship: a recognised production tradition and a collection centred on a particular material used in work.

The Prevenhuber House was built in the second half of the 16th century in the style of a late Gothic town house. During exhibitions, the gallery there is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; check exhibition times before you arrive. Opened in 2013, the Heiligenstein themed trail uses several stops in and around Sebalduskirche to explain the history of the mountain sanctuary, its significance as a place of pilgrimage and the work of Saint Sebald. The architecture and themed trail thus offer different ways to explore history: through a town house and through stops around a church.

The pilgrimage church of Maria Neustift houses an almost life-size statue of the Madonna dating from 1450. Church tours are available by prior arrangement with the parish office. The Magical Nativity Scene World displays around 400 nativity scenes and is open year-round. Tours can be arranged by telephone. The offering therefore ranges from a single historic work of art to an extensive collection of nativity scenes.

Digital remembrance and routes through the region

Virtual Weißwasser uses augmented reality on a smartphone or tablet to make the historically significant Weißwasser mining settlement, dismantled in the 1960s, visible and accessible once again. The experience extends for around 800 metres along the Hintergebirgs cycle path. Here, a specific route combines with a digital exploration of the settlement’s history.

The Ennstal Visitor Centre is located between Reichraming and Großraming, right on the Enns River; it houses the “Wonderland of Forest Wilderness” exhibition. The Steyrtal Museum Railway offers a different perspective on the landscape: its 17-kilometre route runs from Grünburg to Steyr through the wild and romantic floodplain landscape of the Steyr River. It is also Austria’s oldest narrow-gauge railway. For journeys between stops and accommodation, the Sebaldus Shuttle operates between Großraming, Losenstein, Laussa, Maria Neustift, Gaflenz and Weyer. Check the shuttle’s current operating details before your trip.

The Mediterrana thermal spa offers another focus for an excursion. Facilities listed include a panoramic whirlpool, a vitality pool, an outdoor summer pool and the Relaxium sauna world. As facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.
