Wolfern has several distinct sides: the special Wolfern Fairytale Trail, Maria Laah Pilgrimage Church, the history of Losensteinleiten Castle and a cycling route through the town. When planning your trip, you can consider hiking, architectural history and outdoor activities as separate highlights.

Hiking: Fairytale Trail and Circular Trail

The Wolfern Fairytale Trail is a special hiking trail. It starts at the market square opposite Café Lichtblick, near Kirchenplatz 3 by the Maibaum-Lücke. The market square, café and additional local landmarks provide a specific starting point for finding your way. Another hiking route is the Hagleithen Forest Theme Trail: a 1.8-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends at the Mausoleum of the Princes of Auersperg. The trails differ in their features: the Fairytale Trail is defined by its starting point and local landmarks, while the Hagleithen circular trail also has a stated length and circular route. This makes it possible to distinguish between two hiking options based on specific route details.

Maria Laah: Date, Architecture and Spring

Maria Laah Pilgrimage Church was first mentioned in a document in 1212. The year refers to the documentary mention; the Late Gothic classification of the altar area is a separate architectural aspect. Another special feature lies directly beneath the church altar: a spring rises there and is channelled into a fountain chapel. Maria Laah thus brings together distinct themes—a historical date, the art-historical classification of the altar area and the course of the water into the fountain chapel. This distinction is especially useful for understanding the history of the place: the year and the architectural classification do not describe the same thing.

Losensteinleiten Castle and the Mausoleum

The construction history of Losensteinleiten Castle can be divided into two phases. Bernhard von Losenstein had the present-day castle built in 1515. Between 1550 and 1570, Georg Achaz von Losenstein enlarged it. The dates therefore mark first its construction and later its expansion. The Mausoleum of the Princes of Auersperg adds a much later milestone: the Auersperg family built it in its present form in 1910 and 1911. Taken together, the local history spans the castle’s construction and expansion in the 16th century and the mausoleum’s present-day form in the early 20th century.

Outdoor Activities and Cycling

At Waldbad, the activity trail includes an outdoor fitness area with seven pieces of equipment, as well as a balance trail for children. These are two distinct elements of the same trail: an outdoor equipment area and a dedicated balance area for children. This adds an activity option to the hiking and cultural themes, without suggesting that all activities have the same focus.

The Traunviertel Tour also offers a different perspective on Wolfern: it is a cycle route that passes through the town. The fourth stage follows the Über-Drüber-Landpartie to Wolfern and Gleink. The general route description and the stage details answer different navigation questions: one locates the cycle route in Wolfern, while the other names the stage’s route and destinations.
