An extensive juniper heath and steeply descending cliffs define Laussa’s protected natural landscape. The area also features traces of cultural history, a motor skills park, a wind farm and two routes of different lengths. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: nature, history or activity. The details can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Nature Reserve with Heath, Meadows and Cliffs
An extensive juniper heath has developed in the “Kalksteinmauer Laussa” nature reserve. The area includes open rock faces that drop steeply, in places almost vertically, particularly near the village centre. Herb and orchid meadows in the “Kalksteinmauer” nature reserve invite you to enjoy relaxing walks. Here, open vegetation, distinctive rock formations and meadows come together. The Kalksteinmauer is therefore not defined by just one natural feature: the juniper heath and meadows offer a different character from the steeply descending cliffs.
Traces of Local History
An extensive settlement site was excavated at the Langensteinerwand in Laussa between 1913 and 1917 and recognised as an important cultural-historical legacy of a distant past. These dates refer to the excavation; they do not indicate when the settlement site was established. A small collection of vessel types, tools and other finds is on display at Laussa Municipal Office. The parish church dates from 1839–1843 and features furnishings in the Baroque tradition. The time periods refer to different things: 1913–1917 marks the excavation, while 1839–1843 denotes the years in which the parish church was built. The Hammerschlössl mansions bear witness to the former wealth of their owners, known as the “Black Counts.” Thus, Laussa brings together a variety of cultural-historical themes: an excavated settlement site, church architecture and evidence of former prosperity.
Activities and Places to Visit
Laussa’s motor skills park offers, among other things, a climbing wall, balance beams, a horizontal bar and a swinging rope. These features cater to different types of movement, from climbing and balancing to swinging. The wind farm offers a different kind of attraction: since 1996, the municipality has owned three wind turbines in what is known as the wind farm. It remains a popular and useful place to visit.
Two Routes with Different Profiles
If you’re choosing a specific route, the two options differ both in activity and in length. The L4 Laussa Trail is a longer, technically easy trail loop around Laussa. It is just under 22 kilometres long and includes 789 metres of elevation gain. The Laussinger Sonnbergrunde is a mountain biking route that starts in Laussa and is just under 13 kilometres long. In terms of length, the Sonnbergrunde is the shorter option; the L4 adds a longer distance, a technically easy rating and 789 metres of elevation gain. Trail conditions can change, so check the latest route conditions before setting out.
