For a stay where both hiking and culture play a part, Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr offers several specific options: trails on the Damberg, viewpoints, and sites associated with peace and churches. You can choose based on the features of each route and the locations of the buildings.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr is characterised by extensive mixed forests and a varied, well-maintained landscape. Well-marked hiking trails lead through largely unspoilt nature. The area also offers cyclists a variety of mountain bike trails and cycle paths; check their local availability before planning a route.
Two Tours with Different Features
The short hiking loop to the Dambergwarte and Laurenzikapelle offers views across the town of Steyr and into Kalkalpen National Park. The Schwarzberg circular trail from St. Ulrich starts and ends in Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr and passes Sonnberg, crosses the Schwarzberg, and goes by the Dambergwarte. The tours differ in their landmarks: the short loop leads to the Dambergwarte and Laurenzikapelle and offers the views described above; on the Schwarzberg trail, the circular route, Sonnberg and Schwarzberg provide orientation. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Dambergwarte: Views and History
The Damberg is 811 metres high and is the local mountain of Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr. The 36-metre-high Dambergwarte stands on the mountain; from there, the tower offers sweeping panoramic views across the foothills of the Alps and the Alpine foothills. The current Dambergwarte opened on 1 October 1972, after earlier observation towers had stood at this location. The tower was renovated in 2014.
Sites of Peace and Worship
The peace monument is a prominent feature of the centre of Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr. The municipality was declared the world's first Peace Community in 1982. The peace trails associated with the monument start at the monument or at the church square in Kleinraming and meet at the Dambergwarte. Here, the landscape and peace trails come together at the viewpoint.
St. Ulrich Parish Church stands prominently on a hill above the Enns Valley; Laurenzikapelle is located on the Damberg in Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr. From the Schoiber car park, a ten-minute walk leads to the chapel. Check local access conditions before visiting, as they can change.
Apitherapy and Bee Products
Haslauer´s Bio Bienenhof in Sankt Ulrich bei Steyr offers apitherapy using beehive air as a respiratory therapy. Advance registration is required for apitherapy; check availability before travelling. The farm's products include blossom honey, forest honey, mountain honey and creamed honey, as well as propolis drops, propolis creams and speciality honeys. The range may change.
