Losenstein brings together cultural landmarks and a variety of walking and nature experiences. The parish church and castle ruins add historical character, while walking and hiking trails and the Nixlucke dripstone cave offer other highlights. When planning your visit, it is worth noting the differences: one trail offers views and reading stops, another follows a named route, and at Nixlucke, the cave destination and climbing opportunities at the entrance come together.

Culture and history in Losenstein

Losenstein Parish Church was built in the Gothic style around 1250. Losenstein Castle Ruins are among the oldest castle complexes in Upper Austria. The two buildings offer different historical points of interest: the church is notable for its construction date and Gothic style, while the ruins are distinguished by their place among Upper Austria’s oldest complexes. Franz Xaver Blasl (1890–1971) was a well-known composer and local poet. Alongside the buildings, he adds music and literature rooted in local culture to the area’s cultural highlights.

Walking trails, a cave and hikes

The F.X. Blasl circular trail is a walking loop with lovely views of Losenstein and numerous stops where you can read, marvel and linger. Both the views of the town and the stops shape the walk. If you prefer to follow a clearly named route, the Klausgraben circular hike offers a different kind of orientation.

Nixlucke is a dripstone cave. You can reach it in about 15 minutes via a forest road and then a woodland path. The time given is approximate; trail conditions may vary by season. Check the condition of the route for your planned visit. There are numerous climbing opportunities near the cave entrance, some of them challenging. The cave entrance and the climbing opportunities nearby are distinct highlights.

The Klausgraben circular hike starts at Losenstein railway station and follows the left bank of the Enns along the Goldgrubweg and the Enns cycle path to the entrance to the Klausgraben. Its specific route therefore differs from a walking loop focused on views and stops. Trail conditions may vary here too, so take that into account when planning.

Stages, crafts and nature

The Sebaldusweg takes three to four stages through the Ennstal parish and via Losenstein; daily reflections accompany the route. Its number of stages and reflections give it a different character from the local circular hikes. The approximate access time to Nixlucke and the stages of the Sebaldusweg answer different planning questions: one helps you gauge the route to a specific destination, while the other describes how a trail is laid out.

On the Enns cycle path, Losenstein is associated with the “Nailmakers’ Trail” and the ironworking craft. This theme adds craftsmanship and ironworking to the area’s cultural landmarks. Losenstein is also close to Kalkalpen National Park. The Hohe Dirn hiking area is another nature destination to consider for a trip to Losenstein.
