Aschach an der Steyr can be explored through three distinct highlights: the Gothic parish church, visible from far and wide; signposted routes through fields and forests; and a cider culture that is also evident in the scattered settlements. When planning, it helps to distinguish between circular routes, longer cycling routes, and cultural or culinary interests. This lets you tailor your stay to the things that interest you most.

Gothic parish church and special features

The Gothic parish church is a landmark of Aschach an der Steyr and is visible from every direction. Its history of construction is reflected in two clearly dated parts: the choir dates from 1471, and the nave from 1513. The dates are 42 years apart, but refer to different parts of the building. The terms denote distinct areas of the church: the choir is the area around the altar, while the nave is the longer space for the congregation. The church also houses an old statue of the Virgin Mary in the weekday and baptismal chapel. It is the only surviving Gothic-era piece.

Circular routes and cycling connections

Eight signposted circular cycling and walking routes pass through fields and forests, ranging from 3 to 20 kilometres. Route length is therefore a useful first point of comparison. A hiking map brings together all eight suggested routes. It is available from the municipality of Aschach an der Steyr and local restaurants, and can be sent to you on request.

There are also two additional routes for cyclists. The Voralpen Radweg R12 starts in Aschach and runs 39 kilometres to Marchtrenk. The Steyrtal Radweg R8 passes through Aschach and follows the Steyr River. Along the R8, there are swimming spots, rest areas, interactive stations, viewpoints and gorges. For planning purposes, the distinction is practical: the circular routes offer signposted suggestions with distances, while Aschach, Marchtrenk and 39 kilometres are the key reference points for the R12, and the R8 is defined by its route through Aschach and along the Steyr River.

Cider culture, the Kirtag fair and local history

In the scattered settlements of the cider-producing municipality of Aschach an der Steyr, there are numerous well-signposted individual farms that produce cider and sell directly to customers. The Moststub’n offers another taste of the region’s cider culture: its quality cider is served with a snack made from regional products. The dining room is in a renovated former cowshed. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Aschach Martinikirtag takes place every year on the first Sunday after St Martin’s Day. If you would like to experience the fair, check the exact date before your trip. You can also explore local history independently of event dates: the Aschach Topothek brings together old photos, documents and stories from private collections and makes them digitally accessible to everyone.
