Reichraming can be explored from a variety of perspectives: the Hintergebirge cycling route follows a former logging railway line, hiking destinations are located in Kalkalpen National Park, and museums tell the story of forestry work and brass production. Nature, physical activity and working history offer different focuses for planning excursions.

Cycling and experiencing the forest

The Hintergebirge cycling route follows the track of the former logging railway, with gentle gradients all the way to Weißwasser. From Reichraming’s village square, it initially runs along a paved local road with hardly any inclines. The former railway line gives the cycling route a historical connection; Weißwasser is the stated destination.

The approximately 6-kilometre circular hiking trail “Im Tal des Holzes” offers a different perspective on the forest. It passes through the valuable ecosystem of near-natural beech forests in Kalkalpen National Park and is described as family-friendly. Thus, the hike focuses on a circuit through the beech forest, while the former logging railway line defines the character of the cycling route.

In the heavily karstified Sengsen and the rugged Reichraminger Hintergebirge, Kalkalpen National Park protects Austria’s largest wilderness area of forest. Hiking destinations in the national park include Anlaufalm and Ebenforstalm. Anlaufalm is also a destination for mountain bikers; from there, visitors can enjoy a view of Größtenberg. Ebenforstalm is a hiking destination offering views across the Reichraminger Hintergebirge and Sengsengebirge. The two alpine pastures therefore each have a distinct view as a point of reference.

The Anton-Schosser-HĂĽtte on Hohe Dirn can also be considered an excursion destination: it is suitable for the whole family and also serves as a starting point for short to medium-length circular hikes. Those looking for a hiking or cycling trip can therefore choose between signposted routes, alpine pasture destinations and an outing to a mountain hut.

Forestry and industrial history

The Holzknecht Museum Reichraming is housed in the former Wallerhütte. This was once an evening meeting place for woodcutters. The museum explores their way of life and work in the 19th and 20th centuries, illustrated with tools, models and visual materials. The hut’s location and former use provide a tangible historical context for the subject.

The Brass Museum focuses on the economic history of the brass factory and the achievements and culture of its workforce. Its centrepiece is a 1:10 scale model of the brass factory, made from a painting dating back to the 18th century. The model uses several stations to explain the process of brass production in Reichraming. Those interested in how it was made will find a different perspective here than at the Holzknecht Museum: that museum focuses on ways of life and work, while this one explores the factory’s history and production process.

Further traces of work in the forest can be found at KlaushĂĽtte and Schieferstein. KlaushĂĽtte was built in 1758 and formerly served as accommodation for forestry workers. Mining pits from medieval iron ore extraction are still visible on Schieferstein. Together, these places open up various historical themes, from forestry work to iron ore mining.

Water-based excursions and getting your bearings locally

ARENA SCHALLAU is a landscape park on the banks of the wild Reichramingbach, on the site of a former log-driving facility. Activities on offer include climbing, cycling, stream hiking and beach volleyball. In summer, the clear waters of the Reichramingbach invite visitors to swim; conditions may vary by season. Horse-drawn carriage rides, including a hearty snack, follow the Ramingbach into the Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Check the availability of these rides before your trip.

Nearby, between Reichraming and Großraming, is the Ennstal Visitor Centre. It offers information on hiking and mountain biking routes, themed trails, the opening hours of alpine pastures and mountain huts, and regional excursions. The visitor centre also houses the “Wunderwelt Waldwildnis” exhibition. Check current programmes and operating details before your trip.

Reichraming railway station is the starting point for the “L4 Bahnhof Reichraming – Schieferstein” tour. The excursions described therefore differ not only in theme, but also in their starting points and character: from a circular hike through beech forest to cycling routes and alpine pasture destinations, museums and activities by the water.
