Between local history and regional discoveries
The Annakapelle is the oldest building in St. Johann im Pongau. At the same time, the destination is about more than historic buildings: the town also offers Geisterberg and three cross-country ski trails, among the varied options that may interest you. Further afield in the Pongau, there is also mining, railway and mill history. The range therefore extends from a chapel to regional routes and exhibitions.
Play stations and a via ferrata at Geisterberg
At Geisterberg, more than 40 large and small play stations line hiking trails that are mostly suitable for pushchairs. The many stations give this outing a different structure from a visit to a single building: the trail connects several opportunities for discovery.
Drachis Klettersteig adds a different kind of activity at Geisterberg. Secured with a steel cable, it leads across a 40-metre-high rock face. This places play stations and a specific via ferrata section side by side as distinct experiences. If you plan your outings according to your interests, it is worth considering these two offerings separately rather than combining them into a single experience.
Ore of the Alps: a regional perspective
The Erzweg is about 60 kilometres long and connects Hüttau, Bischofshofen, Mühlbach am Hochkönig and St. Veit im Pongau. Its length and the four towns it links give it a regional scale. Unlike the Annakapelle or an individual play station, the theme of ore mining here spans several municipalities.
The visitor centre of the UNESCO Global Geopark Ore of the Alps provides an overview of attractions throughout the geopark, including geosites, show mines, demonstration tunnels and museums. A joint exhibition by the towns in the geopark—Hüttau, Bischofshofen, Mühlbach am Hochkönig and St. Veit im Pongau—focuses on prehistoric and historic ore mining. This offers two different ways to explore the same broad subject: an overview of different types of attractions and an exhibition that puts ore mining at its centre.
The Maximilians-Bauernmarkt in Bischofshofen also adds a locally rooted offering to your view of the region. It takes place weekly on Fridays in the town centre and offers regional specialities, handicrafts, and organic-quality fruit and vegetables from farmers in Salzburg. Check the current market calendar before your visit.
Railway and mill history
The Tauernbahn Museum in Schwarzach is dedicated to the history of the Tauern Railway and is housed in a former railway depot. The railway line has connected the Pongau with Carinthia since the beginning of the 20th century. Together, this offers a look at two scales of transport history: the museum focuses on the railway, while the rail connection links the Pongau with another region.
At the 7 MĂĽhlen open-air museum in Pfarrwerfen, the mill trail explores the history and significance of grain cultivation, as well as milling techniques in historic mill buildings. Watermills were already operating at this site in the Middle Ages. Here, the focus is not on extracting ore, but on grain and its processing. The contrast between these themes makes regional history more varied without reducing it to a single economic past.
Cross-country skiing in St. Johann
St. Johann has three cross-country ski trails: in Plankenau, in Alpendorf–Ötzmoos, and the Alpendorf high-altitude trail. The named locations give you a practical point of reference if cross-country skiing is among your travel interests. Together with the offerings at Geisterberg, the trails represent the sporting side of the town; the Annakapelle adds a historical note. You can therefore choose what to prioritise: cultural discoveries, play stations or cross-country skiing.
