The Gerzkopf reveals two sides of hiking in Neuberg: a trail through the Gerzkopf moorlands and summit views across several mountain ranges.
Gerzkopf Moorlands and Summit Views
The trail up the Gerzkopf leads through spruce forest and a dense belt of mountain pines, which encloses the Gerzkopf moorlands. They are unique in the province of Salzburg and of particular ecological value. From the summit, the views extend across the Gosaukamm, the Dachstein massif, the Tennengebirge and the Niedere Tauern. To the east, the striking BischofsmĂĽtze dominates the landscape; the peaks of the Hohe Tauern are also visible in the distance.
Stages and Hiking Directions
Two stages of the Salzburger Almenweg offer different directions to consider when planning a hike. Stage 21 passes via the Hofalmen to the Neuberg district; Stage 22 leads from Neuberg over the Gerzkopf to St. Martin am Tennengebirge. This means Neuberg is the stated destination for the first stage and the starting point for the second. These directions can help you decide whether to reach Neuberg on the stage or hike from there over the Gerzkopf.
Stops and Local Trails
For the Gerzkopf hike, take the FIDIBUS, the Filzmoos hiking bus, to the starting point in Neuberg at the “Abzweigung Gseng” stop. For the return journey, the stop is right by Hotel Neubergerhof. Include both stops in your plans and check the FIDIBUS timetable in advance.
Another specific hiking option is the Arzbergalm: from Neuberg, the trail starts at the junction below Neubergerhof and follows forest road 50 B. It takes about 1ÂĽ hours on foot to reach the alpine hut. The small, cosy hut is at the end of the Neuberg Valley.
More Activities
If you’d like to add something different to your itinerary alongside hiking, Neuberg has an adventure mini-golf course around the pond at Landhotel Alpenhof. The course has 18 holes with unusual themes, including pinball, roulette and a volcano.
A specific cycling route is also available: the SW09 circular tour “NEUBERGRUNDE” (“NEUBERG ROUND”) follows forest and natural trails to Gsenghof-Alm and is suitable for beginners. So, as well as hiking trails, you can choose a designated cycling loop and a destination at Gsenghof-Alm.
Winter in Neuberg
Once a week in winter, a guided snowshoe hike is offered through the forests of the Neuberg winter wonderland, accompanied by a guide from Filzmoos Active. For ski days, a specific schedule applies: the slopes in the Filzmoos/Neuberg ski area are closed from 17:00 to 08:30 for winch-assisted piste grooming. As this is seasonal operating information, check the times again before your trip.
