Forstau offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: trails, the Fageralm, religious sites and seasonal events. Which of these shapes your stay depends mainly on whether you travel in summer or winter and what interests you.
Hiking and a range of tour options
In summer, there are more than 50 km of hiking trails in and around Forstau. Forsti’s Fitness Trail is about 3 km long and has 11 fitness stations. Check the official route details before setting out on a specific tour, as they may be updated. The approximate length and number of stations give the trail a clear fitness focus, while the summer hiking options are broader.
The Bachweg connects several Kneipp stations with an educational medicinal herb trail. Its focus differs from the fitness stations on Forsti’s Fitness Trail: here, the emphasis is on Kneipp activities and knowledge about medicinal herbs.
The named route features also help you find your bearings on other tours. The Zaimberg-Runde mountain biking route passes the Langeggteich nature reserve. The Forstauwinkl-Tour (SW 12) runs from Forstau along a forest road to the head of the Forstauwinkl valley. The nature reserve is a landmark along the Zaimberg-Runde, while the forest road and the head of the valley are the defining features and destination area of the Forstauwinkl-Tour. This lets you choose a tour based on the route described.
Fageralm and winter trails
The Fageralm is on a sunny high plateau at an altitude of 1,600 to 1,885 m. Forstau has more than 20 km of cleared winter walking trails. As actual winter conditions can vary, it is a good idea to check them before setting out on a specific tour.
The Fageralm has three children’s themed trails: Luna Loop, Funny Fox and Chilly Joe. As these named offerings may change, it is worth checking the latest information before planning your trip. The Resch Ski School on the Fageralm in Forstau offers children’s ski courses with supervision over lunchtime. The themed trails and ski courses are different options for a stay on the Fageralm; which one is right for you depends on your travel interests.
Churches, chapel and Bauernherbst
The Catholic parish church of St. Leonhard in Forstau was built in 1742 and features a Baroque high altar with columns. Lourdes stones and a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes are in the Lourdes Chapel, which is a popular pilgrimage site. Visitors interested in religious sites will find two specific highlights here: the parish church’s Baroque high altar and the Lourdes Chapel’s distinctive features.
The Salzburg Bauernherbst (Farmers’ Autumn) adds a seasonal highlight: in Forstau, weekly hikes, bread baking and butter churning are organized as part of the event. Dates and individual activities may change. So check the event dates and the program for your visit before travelling.
