Mining gives Hüttau a clear cultural focus: the copper mine at Larzenbach and the mineralogical museum “Ores, Gold and Minerals” place the history of ores and minerals at the center. At the same time, alpine landscapes and hiking trails are among the town’s defining features. Hüttau is one of the “Ore of the Alps” Geopark communities; mining and landscape thus offer two distinct ways to plan your trip.

Copper Mine and Museum

It is believed that the copper mine at Larzenbach was already in operation in the 13th century; its first documented mention dates to 1549. The early period of operation therefore remains an assumption, while 1549 marks the year of its first documented mention.

The Hüttau Copper Mine offers guided tours for groups and families. A tour lasts about an hour and covers around 50 metres in elevation. These approximate figures give you a concrete framework for planning your day. As tour conditions can change, it is best to check them before your visit.

The mineralogical museum “Ores, Gold and Minerals” is housed in a building constructed in 1594. The guided tour focuses on the copper mine as a historic site; the museum turns the spotlight on ores, gold and minerals. The Hüttau section of the Ore Trail connects the two stops: it begins at the Larzenbach show mine and continues to the museum in the town center.

The Ore Trail: Hüttau and the Regional Connection

The Ore Trail connects Hüttau, Bischofshofen, Mühlbach am Hochkönig and St. Veit im Pongau along a route of about 60 km. The local section and the full route offer different scales for planning: the Hüttau section focuses on stops in the town, while the full route connects several communities. This makes it easy to decide whether to focus on Hüttau’s mining sites or explore the Ore Trail as a regional connection.

Tennengebirge and Hiking Trails

Hüttau extends into the Tennengebirge, which is part of the Salzburg Limestone Alps Nature and European Protection Area. The landscape is therefore not merely a backdrop for your stay, but part of a protected natural area.

Near Hüttau-Niedernfritz, around 100 km of well-marked hiking trails lead to scenic heights and popular alpine pastures. The trails offer a wide range of destinations within the hiking area. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

A stage to Hochgründeck offers 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys, mountain ranges and villages. Alongside the wider network of marked trails, there is also a specifically named stage offering expansive panoramic views. These two options help distinguish between different hiking interests: a choice of trails leading to scenic heights and alpine pastures, or views across the surrounding area.
